So on my last inspection I moved a small piece of comb that was proud of the main frame comb onto a wired frame. This is what it looks like now.

Last time I did this the bees were avoiding the wires, this time they're integrating the wire more.

All set up ready to do my first split from the swarm that moved in at the beginning of the month.
Really pleased with this queen, there were 4 frames of capped brood with eggs and larvae in all the spaces that weren't capped or full of nectar, plus another 3 frames of eggs and larvae.
Give it a couple of weeks and I'll be looking to requeen the split. 😁

Also , I'm not a good poster person for technology, instead of reaching for my camera to "document " this, I reached for the hive tool and scraped the b@ #*! off!! They are now bird food away from the hive.

First foray into swarm capture. Probably should've put on some trousers at least (🤣)
Swarm captured successfully and easily straight into the new hive. So easy to transport them in an AZ hive compared to the more traditionally used Nationals and Langstroths! All i did was shake the main swarm into the top compartment with the hive laying on its front, closed up the back and stood it up, opened the entrance and shook the smaller clumps onto the landing ramp. Waited for the bees to enter, then closed the front up and went home.

No straps no blankets, no stressed bees!

I have just done the first inspection post the swarm moving in.
Two points worth noting;
1. The bees are calm. I didnt need to use any smoke
2. The queen was easy to spot and surprisingly seems to be last years hatching!

There are 2 frames with obvious larve and eggs are visible on a third frame too.

Im looking forward to my foray into solo beekeeping 😊

🐝 Welcome to Inapots Honey! 🍯

Thanks for stopping by! This little project started with a love of bees that’s been passed down through our family for generations — and now it’s grown into a small but thriving home apiary here in Southampton.

Over the past year I’ve been learning everything I can about beekeeping: inspecting hives, raising queens, restoring my grandfather’s old smoker, and slowly building a safe, warm space for the bees to live and grow.

I’ll be sharing updates from the hives, photos, honey news, and all the little bee moments along the way.
