The instrument that lets people leave sooner.

Annex 1 says personnel are the main contamination source and asks to minimise numbers, movements and interventions. Environmental monitoring is an intervention too. What shortens it: one-hand operation, a wipeable body, a battery that lasts the shift, pre-loaded locations and recipes, a stylus for gloved hands, and a filtered exhaust so the instrument is not a source itself. None of it is in a standard. All of it follows from section 7.

The probe is part of the measurement.

Sampling is isokinetic when air enters the probe at the same speed it moves in the room. Faster or slower, and large particles are under- or over-sampled, which shows up first in the 5 µm channel. ISO 14644-1 asks for an isokinetic probe facing the flow in unidirectional air. The probe is sized for the counter's flow rate, so use the one supplied, keep tubing short and straight, and write the orientation into the SOP.

Why 50% counting efficiency is the right number.

ISO 21501-4 requires 50% ±20% counting efficiency at the first channel and 100% ±10% at 1.5 to 2 times that size. A channel is a light threshold: set at 50% for its nominal size, it reads that size correctly, losing a little below and gaining a little above. Set to catch everything, it would also count smaller particles as 0.3 µm and read low. That is why a compliant sheet says 50% at 0.3 and 100% at 0.5, and why classification is done at 0.5 µm and above.

Reading a particle counter spec sheet.

Eight lines matter before price and battery: stated conformity to ISO 21501-4, counting efficiency 50% at the first channel and 100% at 1.5 to 2 times that size, flow accuracy ±5%, zero count of at most 1 in 5 minutes, a stated maximum concentration, filtered exhaust, at least 0.5 and 5 µm channels, and a traceable calibration certificate with a one-year interval.

The rest is convenience. Useful, but second.

How many sampling locations, and what each record must carry.

ISO 14644-1:2015 fixes the minimum by area (Table A.1): 5 locations up to 10 m², 16 up to 104 m², 27 up to 1,000 m². Each has to be representative of its grid cell, not simply under a filter. And each record needs the location name, date and time, sample volume, occupancy state, instrument and operator, as PIC/S PI 041-1 and ALCOA+ require.

Name the points by room and grid, keep the map with the report, and let the instrument record the location with the sample.

Counts per cubic metre and micrograms per cubic metre: the same air, two languages.

Cleanrooms are classified by the number of particles (ISO 14644-1, Annex 1). Health and indoor air quality limits are written in mass: WHO 2021 sets PM2.5 at 15 µg/m³ over 24 hours and PM10 at 45. An optical counter can report both, but the mass value is an estimate built on an assumed density. Good for screening and trends, not a substitute for the gravimetric reference when a legal limit is at stake.

Quote the output your reader understands, and say what it assumes.

Two checks you can run before the calibration lab does.

A particle counter can count particles that are not there, or miss the ones that are. For the first, ISO 21501-4 sets the limit: no more than 1 false count in 5 minutes with a zero-count filter on the inlet. Run it before a classification and after moving the counter from a dirty area. For the second, check the rated maximum concentration at 10% coincidence loss before using a cleanroom instrument in dirtier air.

Neither check replaces the annual traceable calibration. They tell you the instrument is behaving today.
