Decided to do another nitro brown ale to keep us warm on theses chilly winter nights . This time it was a clone of the garage project Kiwi Brown Ale . Turned out great really tasty and a good drop on a winning night for the Chiefs !
Official description:
Brewed for those who enjoy a modern take on a classic, our Brown Kiwi Ale brings together rich malt character with a distinctly New Zealand hop profile.
At its core, this is an easy‑drinking brown ale. Expect smooth caramel and toasted malt flavours up front, with a gentle nutty backbone that gives it depth without being heavy. It’s balanced, clean, and built for repeatability.
Where it stands out is the hop combo. We’ve layered in Southern Cross, Motueka, Raukau, and Nectaron to lift the beer with a fresh, local twist. You’ll pick up subtle citrus and lime from Motueka, soft stonefruit from Nectaron, a touch of resin and structure from Southern Cross, and a rounded fruit character from Raukau.
The result is a beer that sits comfortably between traditional and modern. Malty enough to feel grounded, but bright enough to keep it interesting.
Style: Brown AleCharacter: Smooth, malty, lightly toastedHops: Southern Cross, Motueka, Raukau, NectaronFinish: Balanced with a gentle citrus and fruit lift
A proper Kiwi spin on a classic style, brewed right here for Karaka Bridge.

Bit of a late one… but worth sharing.
Back in February we had a crack at cloning Parrotdog Sun Dog Pilsner. The plan was to brew it, taste it properly, and put up a detailed review.
That didn’t happen.
Took it away on a fishing trip… and to be honest, it didn’t last long enough to analyse. We basically cleaned the keg in one sitting.
Probably the best sign we got pretty close.
Crisp, super drinkable, nice clean bitterness, exactly what you want after a day on the water. Easy to keep going back for “just one more”.
From memory, this one had:
Clean lager yeast profile
Light malt base
Nice noble-style hop finish
Proper summer pilsner feel
Would I change anything? Maybe tighten the bitterness slightly. But overall, pretty happy with it.
Might need to brew it again… purely for quality control purposes

Sunday night session at the Coop, reflecting on a great weekend of sport and unusually awesome winter weather . Ryan got to taste the latest brew a fresh hop pilsner using cascade hops grown here in Māngere Bridge . Apparently it got better after the first sip, not sure that’s exactly the feedback a brewer enjoys but at least it’s drinkable.

We all tried the latest brew over Easter ,it was a clone of the Australian Philter XPA. The is what the experts say it should taste like :

Philter XPA (4.2% ABV) is a highly awarded, widely acclaimed Australian Extra Pale Ale known for its sessionable, tropical, and easy-drinking nature. It features a bright, naturally cloudy appearance with prominent mango, passionfruit, and citrus hop aromas, balanced by low bitterness, making it a popular choice for casual drinking.

There was lots of casual drinking so
I am guessing we captured the taste ok .

Trying a new beer at Sunday night dinners . This one was a clone of Brujos Brewing’s “The Staff “.

Style: NZ Pilsner / Modern Hoppy Pilsner.
Hops: Featuring NZ Cascade, Nelson Sauvin, Riwaka, Nectaron, Quantum Nelson, Tettnanger, and Saaz.
Profile: Described as a bright, aromatic beer with subtle citrus sweetness, often categorized as a modern "hoppy lager".

Not sure I captured all of those flavours but it is certainly a hoppy Pilsner and tastes great !

Finally got to post a favourite that has been easy drinking over the summer for special guests . I am not really much of a Cider drinker but happy to have one on tap for those that like it . They tell me it’s ok , just sweet enough. Tried it in the ninja slushy maker and it frosted up nicely but failed the taste test.

Felt like I needed to have an another crack at doing one of my favourite summer beers a Pacific Pilsner . I think I have finally found a recipe that works, using a Williams Warn premium lager kit.
