Pegasus Bay Prima Donna 2016 ‘Aged Release’ Pinot Noir

Some wines ask for patience. Prima Donna rewards it beautifully.

Pegasus Bay’s Aged Release Programme began in 2006, when they set aside a small number of cases of key varieties with the intention of releasing them after a decade of careful bottle maturation. The idea was simple but special: to give customers the rare chance to experience these wines at full maturity, with all the complexity that time can bring, while still leaving years of excellent drinking ahead.

The 2016 season delivered beautifully. Warm, settled flowering was followed by a perfect summer and a warm, dry autumn, allowing the fruit to reach excellent flavour development and physiological ripeness.

Prima Donna sits within Pegasus Bay’s reserve series and is only made in exceptional years. It is drawn from the best barrels, sourced from some of the oldest ungrafted plantings in the vineyard, where small berries and loose bunches help create depth, concentration and elegance.

Now showing a deep ruby hue turning brick-red at the edges, this aged release offers a complex and compelling bouquet of pomegranate, cherry, vanilla, chocolate and spice. With time in bottle, savoury notes of game, mushroom and thyme have begun to unfold beautifully. Fine French oak, silky tannins and refreshing mineral tension come together in a Pinot Noir of superb structure, texture and length.

Fresh Mikkeller drops have landed, brewed right here in New Zealand by Garage Project.

Mikkeller has worked with select top breweries across the world, and for Asia Pacific they have partnered with none other than Garage Project. These are Mikkeller recipes brewed in New Zealand, with a local twist: specially selected hops from Nelson Lakes, Gladfield malts, and a touch of lot-selected Yakima Chief Hops.

We have managed to secure limited amounts of three cracking releases:

West Coast IPA | 6.0%
Lean, bright and crisp, with pilsner malt and flaked rice keeping things clean while Simcoe brings resin and pine, Taiheke adds citrus zest, and Riwaka lifts it with passionfruit and tropical character. Snappy, clear and hop-led.

Mikkeller Mysterious Path
Hoppy Pilsner | 4.7%
A clean Bohemian-style pilsner base meets a riot of dry hops. Simcoe, Motueka, Citra and Nelson Sauvin bring lime, tropical fruit and white wine aromatics over a crisp, cracker malt finish. Bitter enough to bite, smooth enough to disappear quickly.

Hazy IPA | 7.0%
A New England-style IPA full of breezy tropical fruit character, dry-hopped with El Dorado and Citra. Soft, juicy and very easy to like.
