Our housecow, May, had her 6th calf this week. So we will soon be back on wholesome unpasteurised full cream Jersey milk! As you can see from the size of her udder - there is plenty for the new boy and the whole family to enjoy. The calf was born in 10 minutes flat and is half jersey and half angus, to a Storth Oaks Angus bull (T96).

The angus herd are getting stuck into the fresh spring grass and starting to shed their winter coats. The bulls are out with the girls and everyone is happy! We got to do the DNA testing for the heifer calves last week so we can use this knowledge to help us choose the best female calves to retain in our herd for breeding.

I knew that it felt as if we'd had a lot of rain this month, but its well over twice the normal October rainfall. Also the second highest monthly rainfall total in the 10 years we've been at Heartwood Farm.

Looking forward to some sunny dry days in November to grow the lambs, and hoping that I don't have to get the inflatable boat out again!

And so the clean-up continues. Broken fences from slips, fencing stuffed by the trees carried down the valley. Debris to pick out of the fences. Electrics and water pipes to check and repair. Silt covering the flats. In spite of this - there is always someone else worse off and our prayers go out to them.

This little boat saved the lives of about 60 sheep we could only access through the flood water. Crazy weather!
