We're proud to support The Swimmer & The Whales at this year's Nelson Arts Festival — an afternoon with Witi Ihimaera, who at 80 returned to full-time study to immerse himself in the language. His new memoir, Te Kaikaukau, tells the story of that journey.

Celebrating storytelling like this is one of the things we love most about being part of the arts community here in Te Tauihu.

Matangi means wind.

On our Whenua Awa vineyard in the Awatere Valley, the wind is never absent — it’s the thing the vines learn to grow with. What comes off that: low crops, small berries, fruit that’s worked for its concentration.

Hand-harvested, whole-bunch pressed into French oak puncheons, and left to a long, slow wild-yeast ferment. Malolactic came on its own in the spring. Six months more on the lees, minimal handling, then bottled unfined and unfiltered — nothing taken away, nothing hurried.

Stonefruit and pink grapefruit, toasted hazelnut, a line of flint. Rich, but balanced. The kind of w**e that carries the calm of working in rhythm with a place, rather than against it.
