🫛 Market Alert: Beans 🫛

October marks the seasonal transition from Northern to Southern growing regions, creating tighter green bean supplies as production shifts between areas.

Recent heat and unstable weather across the Midwest, along with severe weather impacts in the Northeast, have added further challenges to harvests and transportation. These conditions have limited available supplies and are expected to keep the market firm throughout October.❗

While Southern production is increasing, it will take time for supplies to stabilize and availability to improve.

We continue to closely monitor conditions and remain focused on delivering dependable supply and consistent quality during this transition.

🛑 Market Alert: Tomatoes 🛑

Tomato supplies including Cherry, Grape, Roma, and Rounds remain very tight across both the East and West, keeping markets firm and pricing elevated.

Weather-related challenges, including excessive rainfall and the recent Nor'easter, have accelerated the seasonal decline of East Coast production, with Virginia and other regional programs winding down sooner than expected. Meanwhile, Mexico and Baja continue to report limited availability and fair quality, restricting overall supply. 🌧️

Meaningful relief is not expected until new East Coast and Florida production ramps up later this month, with volumes gradually improving into November.

During this transition period, flexibility on variety, sizing, and pack specifications is encouraged where operationally feasible to help mitigate potential supply gaps and service disruptions. 🍅

Great conversations, new connections, and valuable insights. We're still reflecting on all that came out of this year's Foodbuy USA Partner Summit in San Diego. 🌴

The event brought together partners, suppliers, and industry leaders for several days of collaboration and idea sharing. Courtney Dyess-Mam and Desiree Forsythe were on site representing our team, with Dez taking the stage during Day 2 to moderate a unique live discussion from an avocado grove in Southern California.

Dez’s session followed the journey of an avocado from bloom to plate, highlighting the planning, innovation, technology, and care required to grow, harvest, ripen, and distribute fresh produce. Through conversations with grower and supplier partners, attendees gained a deeper appreciation for the complexity, resilience, and collaboration that power today's produce supply chain. 🥑

Beyond sharing field insights, the discussion showcased the strong partnerships that connect growers, distributors, and customers while reinforcing the value of transparency and collaboration across the supply chain. 🚨 Market Alert: Iceberg Lettuce 🚨

Iceberg Lettuce supplies remain extremely limited as demand continues to increase, keeping pricing elevated to extreme levels. 🥬

Field quality is deteriorating, with growers reporting INSV, Sclerotinia, lighter carton weights, smaller head sizes, and increased insect pressures. Additionally, processors are going through more acreage than normal as yields are heavily impacted.

Expect limited availability, ongoing quality challenges, and extreme pricing to continue for the next few weeks.

❗Market Alert: Cherry Tomatoes❗

Cherry tomato pricing has begun to escalate as East Coast supplies are winding down earlier than expected due to weather-related challenges, including excessive rainfall and other adverse growing conditions. 🌧️

Some East-coast growers have ended their seasons ahead of schedule and are recommending a shift toward grape tomatoes where possible to help balance supply across suppliers.

With supply conditions currently imbalanced between the East and West Coasts, the market is expected to remain firm, and pricing may continue to trend higher over the next several weeks. Relief is anticipated as new East Coast production fields begin harvesting and volumes improve, with market conditions expected to stabilize by mid-October. 🍅

🚨California Weather Alert 🚨

Temperatures are reaching the mid to upper 90s across the Salinas Valley and Watsonville growing regions, before conditions cool down into the 70s later this week.

To protect harvest crews during peak heat, growers are adjusting harvest schedules and ending field operations earlier than normal, which may result in minor harvesting and shipping delays across multiple commodities.

The extreme temperatures are placing additional stress on production, including:

🍓Strawberries
🍓Raspberries
🍓Blackberries
🥗Lettuce
🥗Romaine
🥦Broccoli
🥦Cauliflower
🥗Mixed leafy greens

Short-term impacts may include lighter harvest volumes, smaller fruit sizing, soft bruising, overripe fruit, tip burn, heat damage, and increased insect pressure.
