Prepare the Soil Properly
A healthy, beautiful lawn starts BELOW the sod. Proper soil preparation is one of the most important parts of a successful sod installation because it directly affects rooting, drainage, nutrient availability, and long-term lawn health.
Skipping this step can lead to uneven surfaces, poor rooting, drainage issues, and a lawn that struggles to thrive.
✔️ Remove debris
Clear the entire area of rocks, sticks, old grass, w**ds, roots, and construction debris. Anything left underneath the sod can create air pockets that prevent roots from establishing properly.
✔️ Eliminate existing grass and w**ds
Installing sod over old grass or w**ds creates a barrier between the new roots and the soil. This can lead to weak rooting, dry spots, uneven growth, and future w**d problems.
✔️ Loosen compacted soil
Till or loosen the top 4–6 inches of native soil. Compacted soil restricts oxygen, water movement, and root pe*******on. Loose soil allows Kentucky Bluegrass roots and rhizomes to establish deeper and spread faster.
✔️ Improve the soil if needed
If your soil is heavy clay, sandy, or lacking nutrients, incorporate compost, organic matter, or quality black dirt/topsoil. Healthy soil improves moisture retention, drainage balance, microbial activity, and nutrient availability for stronger turf establishment.
✔️ Grade for proper drainage
Shape the area so water flows gently away from your home, foundation, sidewalks, and patios. Poor grading can lead to standing water, muddy areas, root disease, winter ice damage, and an uneven lawn surface.
✔️ Create a smooth final surface
Rake the soil smooth and break apart large dirt clumps. A smooth base prevents bumps, dips, and air pockets beneath the sod.
✔️ Firm the soil lightly
Lightly roll or tamp the area so the soil is firm but not compacted. You should be able to walk across the surface without sinking deeply. This creates solid soil-to-root contact while still allowing roots to pe*****te easily.
💡 Pro Tip:If water puddles during prep, it will likely puddle after installation too. Fix drainage issues before the sod is laid—not after.
The better the foundation, the faster the sod roots, establishes, and transforms into a healthy long-term
