Candy Mountain Maple finished boiling Yesterday Afternoon! It was a short, crazy season, and we made some great tasting Syrup! The warm Spring weather caused the trees to bud, so we shut down the vacuum pump and opened up the lines to drain. Soon we'll be pulling taps, and then it's time for Summer maintenance and work in the Sugarbush. We really enjoyed seeing everyone at Maple Days and wish everyone a great Summer! Here's a quick video of the steam stacks during the final boil and the last drizzle of sap draining from the mainline!

How's the sap running? We were not expecting much today, because the weather folks were calling for a cloudy day in the low low to mid 30's. Well, things turned-out differently.....and the sap is running well. Here are the particulars...
Our vacuum on the sugarbush is 27". The barometric pressure is 28.7", which translates to an efficiency of 94%. The system is relatively leak-free, because our vacuum pump amperage is low, at about 4.23 amps. Sap is sweet (2% sugar) and clear. The current sap flow is about 90 gallons per hour from the sugarbush. We have 1050 gallons of sap in our holding tank. Want to learn more about the science behind sustainable Maple Syrup Farming? Then, join us this weekend at Candy Mountain Maple when you Visit Thurman for Maple Days! As environmental chemists, Ingrid and Mike would love to answer your family's questions about the science behind modern maple syrup production! We look forward to your visit!

There's one more weekend of Thurman Maple Days...We hope to see you Saturday or Sunday for a taste and tour of the Sugarhouse!

Another great day at Thurman Maple Days is behind us! Ingrid & Mike had a great time answering questions from our young friends....our "Candy Mountain Chemists."
As predicted, sap flow increased over the afternoon, especially after the sun came out. Our sap sugar content was approximately 1.8%. We estimate that we will collect about 1800 gallons of sap, which according to the "rule of 86" we should make just over 33 gallons of maple syrup today. At the time we started our boil at 5:50 pm, according to our "Barometric Computer" the Barometric Pressure was 28.4", Water will boil at 209.4F and syrup will boil at 216.9F. Our vacuum efficiency is approximately 95%, with a measured vacuum of 27" in the sugarbush! The temperature outside is 40F. Too "Geeky" for you? That's OK, we hope we didn't bore you. For our new friends with an interest in the Environment, Chemistry, Engineering or Math related careers, we hope you find this info interesting! Hope to see you next week when you Visit Thurman and Candy Mountain Maple for the last weekend of Maple Days!
