Four SEAL Team Six snipers rolled into Mogadishu with Task Force Ranger on October 3, 1993: Howard Wasdin, Casanova, Little Big Man, and Sourpuss. Their job was simple on paper: hold a blocking position while Delta fast-roped onto the target building, grab the prisoners, leave. The mission brief was compressed into a few minutes. They rode in a HMMWV with no roof, no doors, no windows.

Wasdin traded fire with enemy snipers for half an hour before catching a ricochet behind the knee. Then the helicopter Super Six One went down 37 minutes in, and the raid turned into a rescue. Wasdin, with his injured leg, drove one-handed while shooting out the window, ran his r***e dry, went to his pistol, took a round through the shin, swapped seats to keep fighting, and took a third bullet in the ankle. Then the vehicle hit a landmine, and they had to fight in place until the QRF pulled them out. All four received Silver Stars.

Today, let's raise a glass to the Rangers, Delta operators, 10th Mountain soldiers, and the four SEALs who took part in the Battle of Mogadishu, and remember those we lost.
