The Little Fish Company

The Little Fish Company Shop online at wildlittlefish.com See you at the Market! He now transports a wide variety fresh wild-caught fish to Northern California.

The Little Fish Company offers a wide variety of fresh, wild caught seafood products direct from local fisherman at Farmers Markets throughout California and Nevada. In 2006, Fisherman Brand Little and his wife Laura came up with an idea to cut out the middleman and start marketing their catch to the seafood starved people of the California foothills. As Brand met more and more fisherman out on th

e water, he realized that there was an opportunity to market their catch as well. Today, they have a big, loyal following. They are thankful for the opportunity to provide their customers with fresh premium wild caught seafood products.

New and exciting opportunity for the local seafood lover at Fisherman’s Wharf this Saturday! DO NOT MISS THE BOAT!

For the first time ever, we will have a large supply of Royal Crown Crab (aka California Box Crab) along with our first wild Coonstripe Shrimp of the season.

Most people have never seen or even heard of the Royal Crown Crab much less tasted one. They aren’t your typical Dungeness or Rock crab. These are in the King Crab family and different than anything you’ve had before. Prized by fishermen for their rich, sweet, buttery flavor, they are a true delicacy of the deep.

These crab are not easy to target and they disappear as fast as they show up out on the edge of the continental shelf. They are known as ghosts to the fishermen that frequent the area.

So little is known about them in fact, that the CDFW has given us an exclusive experimental permit to harvest under strict supervision in exchange for valuable sampling data. We are tasked with stacks of paperwork as we are taking measurements and counts of keepers, undersized crab and bycatch. We note the s*x of the crab, if they have eggs, shell condition and a bunch of other data. We then report that information back to the marine scientists at CDFW so they can try and see if this could be a new sustainable fishery for California fishermen.

We are also testing deep water pop up gear in this fishery where all the rope and line is stored on the bottom of the ocean until it is called for with an acoustic pop up. It surfaces from over 600 feet deep.

If you want to check out these Live Crabs or pick up some Live Coonstripe shrimp, this may be one of your few opportunities this Saturday.

We will be selling directly off Fishing Vessel Pale Horse from 7:00 AM until 2:00 PM on Saturday, August 29th only. We will be located at the sales dock in the harbor right before you cross the little bridge to Scoma’s Restaurant.

Be sure to bring a container for your crab or shrimp and come out to meet the crew.

If nothing else, bring the kids out to get a look at these mysterious creatures from the deep.

We can take cash/check/or credit card

Live Royal Crown Crab $15 per pound

Live Coonstripe Shrimp $23 per pound

Box Crab Update!

Crew is currently out on our 5th pull box crab. Got a new record of 305 crab in one string! Next string over had only 25 🤷‍♂️

Starting a new fishery means lots of new records and lots of learning. Rope management has been a big one - each of our 20 strings has over 1.25 miles of rope and we are fishing at depths over 500ft deep. All whale safe gear, pop-up buoys and no vertical line! We’re also learning lots about the box crab themselves - their ground and depth preferences, when they move, and why they move.

We’re recording detailed data on 20% of all pots pulled, identifying all bycatch, measuring every crab whether it’s short or legal, and identifying s*x and egg development. All data is reported back to Fish and Wildlife as part of our Experimental Fishing Permit (EFP) agreement with a goal of assessing the sustainability of a box crab fishery. Hopefully, we continue to learn more about these unique species! Right now, it feels like we have more questions than answers, but as the crew likes to say, “the more you know, the less you know”

Box Crab or Bust!
Our first box crab pull resulted in 9 box crab. 200 pots for 9 individual crabs. A lot of empty pots. Not a good ratio. After adjusting our setting method, we tried again...and got 27 crab...still operating in a major loss. Each trip costs thousands in fuel and bait, not to mention the many hours of labor invested.

Our third trip we finally got confirmation that there are in fact crab in the sea! 3 of our 10 strings of gear caught significant crab resulting in over 430 crab caught! We still have a lot to learn but are hopeful that we can bring a steady supply of this delicious crab all while providing valuable information to Fish and Wildlife to assess the sustainability of the Box Crab fishery.

Our crew is currently out on the fourth run through the gear... we'll see what they find🤞

Try it yourself! This weekend at all market locations! Preorder at wildlittlefish.com
