This week for fun fact Friday we are looking at…
Potato Fruit🥔
The potato fruit, also known as a potato berry, is the part of the potato plant that, after flowering, produces a toxic, green cherry tomato-like fruit.
These small, round green balls look identical to green cherry tomatoes because potatoes and tomatoes both belong to the nightshade (Solanaceae) family.
🛑Highly Toxic: Do not eat this fruit. It contains high concentrations of solanine and chaconine, which are toxic glycoalkaloids that can cause severe illness.
🌱True Potato Seeds: While they are dangerous to consume, these berries contain hundreds of true botanical potato seeds. Horticulturalists and breeders use these seeds to cross-pollinate and breed entirely new, genetically unique potato varieties.
Impact on Underground Tubers: Finding these on your plant is completely normal and means you had successful flower pollination. It does not affect the safety or quality of the actual potato tubers growing safely underground.
