Thomas Farms We’re happy you’re here! We are Taylor and Catie Thomas. Thank you for joining us!

We are a first generation raw milk micro dairy offering raw milk, raw milk products, baked goods, seasonal produce & free range chicken eggs to the southwest Iowa area. On nine acres outside of Avoca, Iowa we raise chickens, ducks, fruits, vegetables, and offer some value added products such as dried egg noodles and baked goods. We have big plans for expansion in the coming years and can't wait to see where this exciting adventure takes us!!

💫it’s tiiiiimeeeee💫

It may not feel like it yet, but fall with be here eventually (I think, right??) & that means pumpkin everythingggggg!!! But not just any pumpkin, real deal, Iowa grown pumpkin! My pumpkins are still tiny green baseballs, so I reached out to Pinoak Produce and got some cooking pumpkins from her! Just cooked alone they smelled so sweet and delicious!

The funky ones on the right are from pinoak produce & the one on the left is from my mom. They’re both cooking pumpkins, just different varieties! I combined them to get the sweetness of the ones on the right & the structure of the traditional one on the left. So they were cooked, pureed, strained for a bit so it’s a thicker puree & then I froze it in smaller quantities so I can use it for all the things! I have more to roast yet, too!

Happy birthday to these cuties!! 🎉🎉

Mr. Thomas Farms & Kimber girl share a birthday today!

Taylor is the unsung hero in this little thing we do! He’s supported me from the very first day of hand milking Kimber in the barn, all the way up to expanding to 5 cows & both of us milking full time with a machine now! He’s jumped in with both feet into farm life, learning everything there is to learn & giving the very best care to our girls, while being the very best husband & father, too! He keeps everything running, he builds endless fence when I want to move pens, he doesn’t complain when I wake him up at 2am for a new calf born, he’s dedicated himself to being a huge part in making sure we get wholesome milk to your table…and everything in between! Thank you, Taylor, for trusting my dream & for supporting me wholehearted. I love you 🖤

And it’s pretty dang special that him & Kimber share a birthday. Because without Kimber, there would be no Thomas Farms as we know it 🥹 She taught me everything I know about milking, she trusted me as I bumbled through learning how to milk (it took us 2.5 hours the first time, and she was so patient) and she taught me how to fall in love with the rhythm of twice a day milking. She’s the epitome of a unicorn cow, and she’s also the cow on our shirts!

She’s also not very fond of staged pictures and decided she kind of didn’t want any part of that nonsense 😅

💫let your garden be wild💫

Just a reminder that a chaotic, w**dy, overgrown, planted too close garden still grows food & flowers & brings joy!

I’ve been gardening for longer than I’ve been able to vote, and over the years I’ve learned that a chaotic garden still grows good, wholesome food! Sure, I try to keep w**d pressure down, but I don’t hold myself to an unattainable standard any more or beat myself up about letting the grass grow around plants. It’s still a beautiful, prosperous, peace filled garden that brings me great joy!

If yours looks like mine, don’t beat yourself up! And if you’re someone who is able to pull every w**d and have perfectly clean rows, I love that for you! Whatever brings us joy, we should do more of that! 🖤

I have a few things up for grabs for today or tomorrow! I had an order prepped & they’re no longer able to pick up. Muffins & creamer were made fresh this morning, and veggies picked last night!

💫birthday cake muffins & more! Add ons!💫

Good morning & happy Monday, friends!! This is our weekly Monday morning add ons post! 🎉

Someone on the farm has a birthday this week! So I’m bringing back the birthday cake muffins! These were a huge hit last time (3 emergency grocery store trips because I under estimated how big of a hit 😅) & it was soooo fun to have ya’ll celebrating with us!

Birthday cake muffins are a vanilla cake muffin with white chocolate chips & dye free sprinkles! Fun, festive & free from junk! 🎂

🍓 Classic strawberry muffins with a bakery crumble are the other muffin flavor!

Coffee creamer flavors are mocha, gingerbread & italian! ☕️ Plus chocolate milk, cream & yogurt!

I should have veggie bags or veggies available throughout the week! Amounts vary, so I didn’t include them in this menu! I’ll post them as they become available! 🌱

-Council Bluffs- 3:45-4:45pm
Thursday:
-Avoca 3:15pm

💫a progression of peach pie enjoyment💫

I’ve never made a peach pie, or a crumble pie; but now I can cross both of those off my list!

Food is art for me, it’s a creative outlet. And it’s really satisfying to create yummy things!

My father in law gave us a bunch of peaches. I canned some after making pie, and I invited my in laws over to enjoy with us of course! The second pie went to my neighbor, because good neighbors are priceless & I try to give him goodies & garden things. He’s another ‘this wouldn’t be possible without’ person, he unloads all our hay for the cows!

Pie crust has to be made with lard, you can’t convince me otherwise. This lard is special, we rendered it from the pigs we raised for butcher 2 summers ago. I think this is the last tub I have, which is sad.

And of course fresh whipped cream from the girls, Belle specifically for this whipped cream!

My kiddos helped me make these pies, thus the copious amount of spoons used! Lots of taste testing! 😅

Bootsy guy got himself a new pen today! A nice shady spot in the timber to loaf around & live the best cow life! He may be destined for the freezer, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t treated like a king while he’s here.

That’s one of my favorite things about raising (some of) our own food. We can ensure they get treated well during all parts of their lives. Our farm isn’t magazine worthy or always aesthetically pleasing, it’s very much a working farm. But all the ‘mess’ is a paradise for animals. Space to roam, growing grass, sunshine, a roof when they need it, quality feed-all the things animals love and require. What kinda looks messy to me is a beautiful life for my animals. And that makes my heart happy. That they get to live their lives happily and beautifully.

💫expect the unexpected💫

How to have 💣 proof milk cows who roll with the crazy of farm life? Start em young!

I like my girls to be solid. To be able to stand like a rock when there are kids, cats, chickens, wind, rain, snow, thunder, barn sounds, doors, strangers, flappy things etc. And if I expect that of them it’s my job to put in the work to help make them that way. I do lots of annoyingly stupid things to even the grown cows. Set things on their back, flap a feed sack over them, bang around in the barn. Having adjustable cows is helpful for not only my safety, but theirs too.

A spooked cow will run through a fence, try to jump over things they can’t etc. Anything to get away from the scary. So we work really hard at making nothing scary. Of course we can’t trial every single situation they’ll be in over the course of their lives, but by teaching them to expect the unexpected it teaches them to be adjustable & go with the flow.

Kids are also very helpful for this, they seem to come by it naturally 🤣

I’m posting this a day early, as the pick up schedule is just a tag wiggled around this week! Also, how cute is that little cow on the menu?!

Muffin flavors this week are german chocolate (chocolate muffin with coconut, dark chocolate chips and pecans with a chocolate crumble 😋) and mixed berry with cherry! I’m very excited about both of these! 🍒

Coffee creamer flavors are tiramisu, maple pecan & sweet cream! Tiramisu is one of my favorites and I’m out so I figured it deserves to be on the menu again! ☕️ 

Other goodies are assorted bags of tomatoes, cream topped milk, chocolate milk, cream & yogurt! 🥛
