So, I reimagined the pig pasture as a more modern, elegant “single strand” sort of thing, because…you know….keeping up with the Joneses and all 😜.
Anyways, I thought I was taking a video of all the pigs running towards their new pasture and it turns out instead of video I had it in portrait mode. So basically I was driving the side by side down the path through the woods staring at running pig butts while holding a phone out in front of me and talking to myself.

And look at my Boar, Bo**er. He’s smiling at me (he’s actually begging for food but I tell myself it’s a smile). Isn’t he cute? 🥰

An interesting comparison between tractor supply hatchery Plymouth Barred Rock and standard bred (meaning bred to the American poultry association standard of perfection) Plymouth barred rock, from a private breeder. You can see one has tighter barring, darker colors, and more refined face smoother transitions throughout her body (if you were to pick her up she would be heavier and more muscled. The hatchery barred rock has muted coloring, pale blurry bars, is lighter and poorly put together. She lays eggs too heavily her first two years then tends to burn out. My darker, heavier standard bred will make a golf table bird as well as lay well inter her adult years (albeit at a lesser rate than her hatchery sister). Also, roosters from hatchery bred birds tend to be more aggressive (not always, there are exceptions to everything) and privately bred birds tend to be friendlier. Usually due to breeder selection (no one wants to breed an as***le rooster). While I love both chickens, the hatchery bird has little value to me beyond the fact that she’s a sweetheart, but the standard bred girl will go into my breeding program, as she’s a good representative of what the heritage birds of the olden days were bred towards….egg AND meat production. A true dual purpose chicken. I should note that my standard bred girl is a pullet and only about 5 months old but she’s shaking up nicely in comparison to the drawing.

The morning haul. Anyone interested in quail eggs? I sell them by the two dozen pack, 5 dollars each but if someone is interested in a larger quantity for pickling or such, I’m happy to make a deal! Quail eggs are super nutritious and denser than chicken eggs containing higher amounts of protein, B12 and iron per gram 💪

Some things I’ve been working on here at the ‘ol Double J:
1. Not walking into the web of a deadly man eating garden spider. They say they aren’t deadly, but who are “THEY” anyways?
Trust no one.

2. Moving my pigs onto a large wooded lot we purchased in our neighborhood a while ago. I’m trying out hotwire because I know the adult pigs will respect it, but I’m not sure about the babies. It’s entirely possible the neighbors are about to get an introduction to our piglets. At least they’re cute 🤦‍♀️.
