Just saved this wee little chick from drowning in one of our duck pools. Her head was still above water but sheโ€™s soaked and terrified so I have her wrapped up in my shirt drying off. Talk about being in the right place at the right time ๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿฅ

I want to say a HUGE thank you to the lady in the little white pick up that just pulled in our driveway in a panic to let us know a coyote was attacking our neighbors goat!! Hereโ€™s an update in case you see this:

We were thankfully able to run down there in time to scare the coyote off before it caused serious damage. Thank god for that because it seemed like the goat had already given up. After giving her a few pets she got back up on her feet and ran back to the herd. When I had previously looked out our kitchen window, I assumed it was two goats in the field so you saved the day. I called and text my neighbor to let him know what happened. Thank you again, you saved that goats life!!! ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ™

The newest members of the farm, two mallard ducklings ๐Ÿฅ๐Ÿฅบ Some of you may remember the wild mallard that showed up on our property a few years back. Our domesticated ducks took her in, and has been with us since. Well, she is currently broody sitting on unfertilized eggs ๐Ÿ’” (our drake doesnโ€™t like her for whatever reason) well these babies were posted on our local community page looking for their forever home (See where Iโ€™m going with this? ๐Ÿ˜‰) We introduced our broody mallard to the babies and she seemed very interested until we locked her up with them. She started to panic and wanted to get back to her nest. We will continue to try and hope for the best. If she doesnโ€™t take them in, we will still make sure they are hand raised with love and care like the rest of our birds. So obsessed with these little cuties ๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿฅฐ

Mother Nature is so cruel.

One of our Free Range Hens that was missing showed up with 7 chicks Thursday morning. By Friday morning she was down to three and by Friday evening she was down to ONE. This means something has just been picking off her chicks one by one during the day.

This morning she still had her one chick and I made sure to keep my eye on them as much as I could through out the day. Around 5PM I notice mama and baby pecking around while a Blue Jay was stalking the baby. I shooed it off and went back inside but continued to look out the kitchen window.

The Blue Jay came back and swooped up the chick, then it dropped it from mid air. Right when I was opening the door to run back out there a crow landed on the chick and flew off with it ๐Ÿ˜ญ I canโ€™t even tell you how traumatic and devastating this was for me to see ๐Ÿ’”

We have had plenty of free range broody hens in the past and this never happened. In the 6 years we have had chickens Iโ€™ve seen a lot of terrible things but this one was heart breaking. Gosh darn circle of life ๐Ÿ˜ž

Lo and behold Ladybird Farmโ€™s very first โ€œOliveโ€ egg ๐Ÿซ’ a few months back, we took in about a dozen pullets from a lady that was rehoming her small flock which came with a couple โ€œOlive eggersโ€ a hybrid breed crossed with a blue egg laying gene and a brown egg laying gene. I am now convinced we need an entire flock of this breed because I am so in love with their dark green pigmented shells ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜
