Mother Nature is so cruel.

One of our Free Range Hens that was missing showed up with 7 chicks Thursday morning. By Friday morning she was down to three and by Friday evening she was down to ONE. This means something has just been picking off her chicks one by one during the day.

This morning she still had her one chick and I made sure to keep my eye on them as much as I could through out the day. Around 5PM I notice mama and baby pecking around while a Blue Jay was stalking the baby. I shooed it off and went back inside but continued to look out the kitchen window.

The Blue Jay came back and swooped up the chick, then it dropped it from mid air. Right when I was opening the door to run back out there a crow landed on the chick and flew off with it 😭 I can’t even tell you how traumatic and devastating this was for me to see 💔

We have had plenty of free range broody hens in the past and this never happened. In the 6 years we have had chickens I’ve seen a lot of terrible things but this one was heart breaking. Gosh darn circle of life 😞

Lo and behold Ladybird Farm’s very first “Olive” egg 🫒 a few months back, we took in about a dozen pullets from a lady that was rehoming her small flock which came with a couple “Olive eggers” a hybrid breed crossed with a blue egg laying gene and a brown egg laying gene. I am now convinced we need an entire flock of this breed because I am so in love with their dark green pigmented shells 😍😍

Nora Jean is 11 months old 🥲 I can’t believe in one short month we will have a 1 year old 🤯 Nora is the heart of the home. She lights up every room with her sweet smile and silly demanding personality, we are all so smitten over her (including the dogs and cats) She is becoming so affectionate and loves to give hugs, kisses and cuddles. She officially has 3 teeth and is still such a foodie. She can say “mama” “dada” “baba” “CC” (sissy) “hi” and “hi baby!” she can wave, clap, and sign “more” and “all done” Ms Rachel is her bestie, she loves being outside on the farm with all the animals, she dances to any and all music and loves when mama reads to her. She always has a book in her hands, which I love. I’ll be spending the next month soaking up the remainder of her babyhood before she officially becomes a toddler 💕😭

Feeling so grateful that we live and are raising our baby on a farm. Tuesday is family day and instead of packing our things up to head to the park or find something to do, we opened our back door to so much beautiful open space to frolic and explore, a garden to maintain, and a whole bunch of animals to care for and love on. There is so much for baby Nora to soak up and observe in every direction. Anytime we are outside on the farm she just lights up, and that fills my heart with an overwhelming feeling of contentness. Counting my blessings today 🙏

Our Pasture Raised Eggs have the most beautiful deep orange yolks 😍 They also have higher levels of omega 3’s, vitamins A, D, E and beta-carotene than a traditional cage free egg. The healthier and happier the chicken, the more vibrant the yolk 🧡🍊

It’s been a long while since someone commented on the price of our eggs, so here we go 😂 Before you make comments like this, maybe you should stop and think about the fact that we not a small hobby farm with 20 chickens. We are a small business with a high overhead trying to make somewhat of a profit. Feeding close to 200 chickens a day ISN’T cheap. Not to mention the grit, the oyster shell, the meal worms, egg cartons, supplements, medicine, Ect.

Honestly, we should be charging more than $7/dz! Unless you have a large flock of chickens you’ve raised from day one, you have no idea what goes into this business. Buying the chicks, raising the chicks, spending a fortune on feed before they even lay an egg. Hence the first egg laid being called “the million dollar egg” We aren’t getting rich raising chickens and selling eggs, we do it because we enjoy it.

Now, I could MAYBE see how someone could think we are more expensive in comparison to someone selling eggs from their backyard flock, but that’s not we are doing. Hense why our eggs might be “$2 more than most” Respectfully, if you think our prices are too high, don’t buy them. No need to make a comment, it’s rude and I won’t tolerate it. If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. Rant over 😬
