This one means the world to me. Larry was a mentor and a friend. He taught me how to graft and how to evaluate fruit. He was very proud of this tree he just didn’t have enough time to release it. I present to you ‘Larry’s Legacy’.
Asimina triloba ‘Larry’s Legacy’
Cultivar Name / Working ID: ‘Larry’s Legacy’.
Breeder / Selection: Larry Sibley (Toll-Gate Gardens); identified, selected, labeled, and propagated by Craig Wolf (AlphaWolf Homestead).
Parentage / Genetics: Registered cultivar; superior seedling selection from ‘Tollgate’, likely pollinated by ‘Prolific’ or ‘Overleese’.
Location & Climate: Bellevue, Michigan, USA; USDA Hardiness Zone 5b/6a.
Cultivar Status: Newly released premier cultivar from Toll-Gate Gardens.
History & Etymology: Named in honor of Larry Sibley, owner and operator of Toll-Gate Gardens, who selected this exceptional seedling before his passing in 2025. It was subsequently preserved, evaluated, and introduced to the public by Craig Wolf.
Pomological Fruit Characteristics
Fruit Size & Weight: Very large, averaging between 280 g and 450 g (10–16 oz).
Fruit Shape & Skin: Extra-large, distinctly round ("cannonball") shape with thick flesh. Features a unusually thick skin that resists splitting and damage if fruits fall prior to harvest.
Flesh Color & Texture: Beautiful creamy-yellow hue, visibly lighter than standard cultivars without being fully white. Highly smooth, soft, and dense.
Seed Content: Exceptionally low seed ratio, with seeds accounting for an average of only 3.6% of total fruit weight.
Flavor Profile: Highly sweet dessert-grade profile dominated by distinct vanilla and pineapple notes, followed by a subtle banana undertone. Completely free of bitterness or harsh aftertaste.
Agronomic Features & Phenology
Yield & Cluster Habit: High productivity, yielding a larger crop volume than its parent ‘Tollgate’ while maintaining large fruit size. Most fruits set singly or in doubles per cluster, simplifying harvesting.
Winter Hardiness: Absolute hardiness under cold northern conditions, selected and tested in Michigan.
Harvest Window: Mid-season (mid-to-late September in Michigan).
