This is a “Tropical or Desert Checkered Skipper”. In this case it’s a High Desert Checkered skipper. While it’s enjoying the calendula on our fame, their host plant is mallow. Common mallow (Malva neglecta) is a “weed” growing all over Central Oregon that has beautiful benefits for people and pollinators alike. Mallow is even mentioned in the oldest book of the Bible as a beneficial plant. The cool thing about this moth is that it has antennae that look like golf clubs.

“Planking” dandelions for the pollinators, people I love and the planet. The best way to deal with weeds is to change your thinking about what they are. The Creator designed our bodies to receive the benefits of plants. But we can only receive those benefits when we change how we think (literally what “repent” means…change how you think). When we change how we think we can receive the benefits and goodness of Creation. How do you used dandelions for your health?

What you don’t know can’t heal you. What you know can. Let’s talk about weeds…specifically Verbascum Thapsus also known as Great Mullein. For centuries it has been used to treat lung conditions. But(t) it’s also known as Cowboy Toilet Paper…”verbascum” means “wooly, fuzzy leaf”. But, the Creator made the best benefit of this plant to treat none other than hemorrhoids. The Divine Creator literally gave us everything pertaining to life and godliness. Apply Creation to your life.

Just imagine that the Creator of all things made PLANTS for the benefit of LIFE. Now imagine applying those benefits to YOUR life.

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” If you live in Central Oregon, you get it. In the High Desert of Central Oregon, plants don’t get an easy life. (Neither do the people.)

If you’ve lived here for any length of time, you have experienced the more intense high-elevation sun, cold nights, massive temperature swings, dry air, the infamous "Tumalo Wind" and lean soil.

And that’s exactly why purple plants belongs here.

At Tumalo Tea, we are fascinated with how environment shapes the plants and us — not only in a spiritual way, but also in a true chemical and biological one. Click the link below to read our latest BeeLog and find out why Purple Thrives in Tumalo. (NOTE: These posts are best enjoyed while drinking a cup of tea.)

Check out how beautiful this corn earworm is (which will turn into an owlet moth). It is diving headfirst into the calendula (pot marigold). This is is only new variety (Sunset Bluff) we added this year and we couldn’t be happier with how beautiful they are!

Look how cute this “Unarmed Leafcutter” bee is!
The males of this species are “unarmed” and not aggressive, but the females can sting if they are threatened or squished. They LOVE the calendula and chamomile on the farm. They mostly gather pollen to nourish their “babies”, but their cute fuzzy little butts help them pollinate with the best of them.
