Raqs Sharqi, known as belly dancing in the West, is an ancient form of communal dance that stretches back thousands of years. Usually performed by women for women, it was a form of fertility dance which focused on isolating abdominal muscles in preparation for childbirth and overall health. It wasn’t until the 1920’s that a nightclub owner popularized the more modern version in Egypt, although the dance also has roots in many other cultures around the world.
