A Sturgeon 'Blood Moon' Tonight - Here's When to Look Up
Thursday night comes with a pretty good reason to step outside and look up. An eclipse peaks during the 9pm hour.
A partial lunar eclipse will be visible across at least part of North America, with the full moon slipping almost entirely into Earth's shadow. At maximum eclipse, 96% of the moon will be covered, leaving just a thin sliver outside the deepest part of the shadow.
That puts this one tantalizingly close to a total lunar eclipse - and should still produce a dramatic "blood moon" appearance as much of the lunar surface takes on shades of red and copper.
When should you look?
The partial eclipse unfolds over several hours Thursday night into early Friday, depending on where you live.
For those of us in the Pacific Time Zone, the maximum visible eclipse will be about 93% - not 96%.
The eclipse itself reaches roughly 96.2% globally, but Bend's local maximum view is listed at 0.930 magnitude, at 9:12pm Thursday. The moon rises in Bend at about 7:41pm, just after the partial eclipse has already started, so we miss the very beginning below the horizon.
Viewing Timeline (Tonight: August 27, 2026)
* Sunset: ~7:47 PM PT- Expect vibrant orange and red horizons.
* Moonrise: ~7:56 PM PT- The moon will peek over the east-southeast horizon just 9 minutes after sunset.
* Maximum Eclipse Peak: ~9:12 PM PT- Earth's shadow will blanket 93% to 96% of the moon, leaving only a sliver of silver edge while the rest glows deep copper.
* Peak Illumination (Astronomical Full Moon): 9:19 PM PT
Why does the moon turn red?
Earth is blocking direct sunlight from reaching the moon during an eclipse, but some sunlight still makes its way through our atmosphere.
Our atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths of light more efficiently while allowing more red and orange light to continue through. That filtered light reaches the lunar surface, giving the eclipsed portion of the moon its familiar rusty red or copper color.
At maximum Thursday night, nearly the entire moon will be sitting inside Earth's shadow, making that color much more noticeable.
And no special equipment is required. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye. Binoculars or a telescope can make the view even better, but simply finding a spot with a clear view of the moon will do the trick.
Who gets the best view?
Not everyone across North America will see exactly the same show.
Generally, locations farther east will have the advantage because the moon will be higher in the sky during the heart of the eclipse.
Farther west, timing becomes more important because the eclipse is already underway closer to sunset and moonrise. Hawaii and Alaska face the toughest timing, with sunset occurring too late for the best view of maximum eclipse. People there may still catch the later stages by watching for the moon shortly after sunset.

Find the moon Thursday night, the clouds cooperate should, and circle 9:12pm Pacific for the main event.
