One thing you hear the most when owning any type of livestock is... "oh that seems like so much fun" or "I bet you love getting to play with all the babies".
While both of those are true, we have to acknowledge that even those of us who do this farming thing on a small scale, we still deal with so much heart break, heavy choices, and hefty vet bills.
I have a doe who is fighting for her life and the lives of her kids. The phenomenal vet I had here left me with everything I would need. He also left me with medications that may be needed if she does not improve; however, giving that medication automatically means she will abort her kids.
So while I would love nothing more than to have her heal, thrive, and kid out in the fall... I know that I may have to make that choice to give her that medicine to save her while loosing her kids.
This has been a hard year, every farmer goes through them and I have been so blessed to not have any major herd issues until this year. That does not seem to help me decompress from the losses, the life saving efforts, and the vet bills.
Keep all of this in mind for these small farm owners who care about each and every animal. The costs of making this life work, keep going up and we will usually eat every expense to keep these animals healthy, safe, and thriving and sometimes those expenses are reflected in the cost of the offspring we list for sale.
Have some grace for those who are trying to live in this lifestyle and those who care so big for each animal they harbor.
