Matlock Ranch offered pastured poultry in summer 2016. These were whole birds available for on-farm pickup only! (If you don’t live near Matlock Ranch, why not get together with some friends or neighbors? If you
each take a turn picking up chickens, you may only need to come out once or twice during the season.) We offer you a chance to pre-purchase our pastured chickens, weighing 4 pounds each on average. You are welcome to pick them up throughout the season (anticipated to be June through October), weekly, monthly, or all at once. We won’t take pre-orders on 9 or fewer. A limited number of birds may be available for non-reserved purchase. Online ordering coming soon! All chickens will be raised on grass in protective pens, moved several times a day, fed non-GMO and/or organic feed, and hand-slaughtered Levitical-style right here at Matlock Ranch. The grain and minerals we offer to the animals are checked so no GMO’s or other harmful ingredients are included. We use organic products whenever possible. Processing is our gift to you...there is no charge. You are invited to tour when we are up and running! The chickens use the pastures in rotation with our cows, which is a mutually beneficial relationship for both species and pasture health. We invite you to reflect upon the manner in which an animal is raised and its sacrifice so that we may be nourished. We take into account the care of the animal as it is raised, the way the animal is fed, and the final thoughtful process of slaughter, which must be conducted in a humane fashion. This includes assuring that the knife is sharp, the animals do not witness one another, and are handled in the gentlest way possible as they are brought to slaughter. We offer gratitude for the sacrifice the chicken is making. We take the whole life of an animal into account, and support a way of farming that is sustainable, enriching, and healing to our earth, our bodies, and our spirits.
