Our hope is to serve as a catalyst for people who wish to reclaim the food they eat. Locavore is a new word describing local eating, which has been adopted by a cutting-edge social movement. But the Locavore concept is nothing new. Not necessarily 100 percent local, but predominately local is the way almost all people ate until the past few generations.

TODAY IS FRIDAY MAY 29 AND THIS IS YOUR DAILY DISH

Today’s special is our Blue Sky BBQ Bowl

Pulled pork piled high over smoky baked beans, sweet cornbread crumble, and tangy slaw that tastes like summer finally got its act together.

It’s the kind of lunch that requires extra napkins and possibly a small post-meal porch sit.

Meanwhile over here at Fish Hawk Acres, the June Specials Menu has officially landed and let us just say…June is looking REAL good.

Fresh flavors. Comfort food. Seasonal goodness. A few surprises. Maybe a little butter. Probably a lot of butter.

And speaking of things worth putting on your calendar:
🍷 Our next Supper Club is June 11
🌾 Our June Farm Dinner is June 24 at The Farm at Fish Hawk Acres

If you’ve never joined us for one of these evenings, picture this:
Long tables.
Good music.
Beautiful Appalachian food.
People lingering instead of rushing.
Fireflies auditioning for a Tennessee Williams play.

It’s less “restaurant” and more “gathering around the table the way humans were probably intended to.”

Also, don’t forget about our Fish Hawk Acres Facebook Subscription

Subscribers unlock discounts, special offers, behind-the-scenes content, recipes, early announcements, and assorted little surprises we toss into the biscuit basket from time to time.

To subscribe, just tap that subscribe button at the top of our page and officially join the gravy-soaked inner circle.

Now if y’all will excuse us, there are baked goods needing arranged, grab-and-go coolers needing filled, and at least one person around here trying to pretend cornbread crumble isn’t a legitimate breakfast food.

See y’all soon.

If you missed your chance for tonight’s dinner, take a look at June!

Today is Tuesday May 26 and this is your Daily Dish at Fish Hawk Acres. 🌿

Today’s Special:
🍽️ The Spring Fever Meatloaf
Herb meatloaf with mashed potatoes, fresh green beans, bacon, onions, and rich brown gravy.

It’s the kind of plate that makes you want to sit down for “just a quick lunch” and accidentally stay long enough to discuss weather patterns, tomatoes, and who used to make the best biscuits in Upshur County.

It’s been a wonderful holiday weekend… and we needed the pause more than we realized.

Now this morning the lights are back on, the coffee is flowing, and the whole crew is moving like determined little kitchen tornadoes getting ready for another busy week.

The grab-and-go cooler is getting loaded up.
The bakery counters are filling with all sorts of sweet temptations.
The ovens are working overtime.
And somewhere in the building somebody is probably hollering:
“WHO MOVED THE TONGS?”
Which means nature is healing.

And speaking of busy…
our FIRST FARM DINNER OF THE SEASON is TOMORROW NIGHT at The Farm at Fish Hawk Acres.

Long tables.
String lights.
Live music by the Sago River String Band.
Stories.
Fresh food.
Country air.
And a chance to slow down long enough to remember what gathering around a table is supposed to feel like.

Have you made your reservations yet?

Because once those seats are gone, they are gone like deviled eggs at a church picnic.

📞 Call us today to reserve your spot.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend from all of us at Fish Hawk Acres. 🇺🇸

This weekend always feels layered to us.
Part celebration.
Part gratitude.
Part ache.

There’s something about small-town Memorial Day weekends in Appalachia that settles differently in the heart. Flags moving in cemetery wind. Cookouts and folding chairs. Stories about people no longer here being told between bites of potato salad and slices of pie.

Food has always carried memory.
I think that’s part of why we care so deeply about what happens around our tables here.

Because sometimes feeding people is not really about hunger.
Sometimes it’s about comfort.
Connection.
Belonging.
A pause in a loud world.

And truthfully, this little place has become that for us too.

Fish Hawk Acres started as food.
But somewhere along the line, it became people.
Relationships.
Stories.

A second chance at learning what really matters.

Some days we are exhausted.
Some days we wonder if anybody notices how hard this all is behind the scenes.
And then somebody walks through the door and says:
“This place feels like home.”

And somehow that keeps us going.

So as we head into this holiday weekend, we just want to say thank you.
Thank you for supporting local.
Thank you for supporting our strange little Appalachian food dream.
Thank you for showing up for supper clubs, lunch specials, farm dinners, bakery cases, and conversations that linger longer than expected.

And most importantly, thank you to the families carrying the memory of loved ones.

❤️ Just a reminder:
Fish Hawk Acres will be CLOSED on Memorial Day, Monday May 25 so our staff can rest and spend time with loved ones.

We will reopen Tuesday May 26 at 8 AM.

They’re becoming part of the table.

Our Fish Hawk Acres Subscription was created for the folks who believe food is more than fuel. The ones who understand that a good meal can hold a memory. That soup season matters. Your subscription helps support something bigger.
It helps us keep telling Appalachian stories through food.
It helps us keep making things from scratch.
It helps us keep creating gatherings around long tables where people still talk to each other.

Last night’s Supper Club at Fish Hawk Acres held more than good food and stories around the table.

It held a secret we’ve been waiting a long time to share.

Many of you have asked Chef Dale Hawkins for years:
“When’s the cookbook coming?”

Well friends…
it turns out the answer was bigger than a cookbook.

We are beyond honored and excited to officially announce that Chef Dale Hawkins and bestselling Appalachian novelist Sarah Loudin Thomas are collaborating on a brand new book:
Our Appalachian Table: Food That Tells a Story

The project has officially been contracted by Agate Publishing in Evaston, IL and is expected to release in late 2027 or early 2028.
And honestly?

This book feels less like a project…
and more like a love letter to Appalachia.

To the people who still carry recipes in their heads instead of measuring cups.
To church suppers and strawberry festivals.
To soup beans simmering all day.
To gardens, canning jars, cast iron skillets, maple syrup boils, and stories told slow across kitchen tables.

This collection will blend Chef Dale’s seasonal Appalachian recipes with original short fiction by Sarah Loudin Thomas, creating something neither a traditional cookbook nor a traditional story collection has quite done before.

Food and storytelling have always belonged together here in the mountains.
We tell stories while snapping beans.
We process grief through casseroles.
We celebrate with pie.
We hold reunions around folding tables.
We remember people by what they cooked.
That’s the heartbeat of this book.

And hearing this announcement shared aloud last night, inside a room full of people gathered around a supper table at Fish Hawk Acres, felt emotional in a way that’s hard to fully explain.

Two Upshur County voices.
One table.
One shared love for Appalachian culture and foodways.
One dream finally beginning to take shape.

Chef Dale said it best:
“Storytelling is such a huge part of gathering around the table in Appalachia.”

We couldn’t agree more.
Thank you to everyone who has supported Fish Hawk Acres through the years. Every supper club, every farm dinner, every slice of pie, every conversation across our tables helped make moments like this possible.

And trust us…
this is only the beginning!
