Today, I made my semi annual visit to Hutto’s Home and Garden Center……………Plant variety means everything to real gardeners, and they have a great selection to choose from!!!! I stocked up on all of my favorite varieties of seed for the Fall and early Spring garden….
I also purchased a few broccoli and cabbage plants…Hutto’s has very knowledgeable personnel to answer any question that you might have…..Instead of a tray that is just named broccoli, you actually know what variety that you are purchasing. The family business has been in existence for three generations. I highly recommend Hutto’s on Ellis Avenue in Jackson, Mississippi. 🌱🫚🪻🪴

My wife made this beautiful jelly with some scuppernongs and a few wild muscadines that I picked! She says that I am too slow as far as canning goes, so get out of the way!………. I can live with that!🤔

Castor bean plant
The number three (3), can mean that it is a legume like string beans, clovers, and so on ; or it can mean poison - like poison ivy. All parts of the Castor bean are poisonous .. Old timers believe that the roots growing in the soil deterred moles from their garden .. Research has proven that this is not entirely true, but I plan to make a castor oil spray from the seed to spray on the mole runs. This is said to be effective!……… Traps are sometimes effective during wet weather, but are a hit or miss situation. I only caught four (4) this year with my traps, and still have moles.

Yes, I still have tomatoes for home use that have been bearing since mid June. I do not know everything about growing a garden, but I do have almost 70 years of experience!
I learn something from other gardeners on a regular basis. Learning comes from experimenting and making mistakes.
All plants need proper watering, whether from the sky or artificial. Another thing to know ….is to lay off of soaps and fungicides when the temperature is this hot and the sky is sunny. Any coating on the leaves will not allow the plant to breathe, thus death is inevitable!🤔

A variety of vegetables were harvested from the garden this morning. ….Rain is still needed badly, but was very grateful for today’s harvest of okra, tomatoes, butterbeans, eggplant, bell pepper, and watermelon 🍉!

Oh no, deer have found the okra!! Any time , in the late Summer or Fall, that we are experiencing a severe drought.. it is next to impossible to keep deer out of a garden……
Drought conditions reduce the amount of browse in the dry woodland area…. So here they come to your succulent, fertilized garden…… Looking forward to some deer burger!

Yesterday was National Watermelon Day! I posted a fun post on my personal page about it.
Do you remember back 50 or more years ago, when more people lived-on a small farm?, Many rambunctious teenage boys would go out at night to steal a farmer’s prized melon from his patch. It wasn’t that they wanted or needed the melon 🍉 , but it was all a game to see if they could do it without getting caught!
This was a leftover piece of the melons harvested yesterday. It is a Jubilee variety, known to many as a Smith County watermelon. There are several great varieties, but this one has always been a consistent yielding variety with good taste !😋

Granddaughter Belle harvested zinnias and marigolds from Grandpa’s garden this morning and made these bouquets…..
Grandpa found a ripe watermelon 🍉 in his patch that has been chilling all day in the refrigerator. It was time to check it out!
