Our journey started with a vision, a little bit of grit — and a whole lot of coffee. Since opening our first coffee shop near the University of Virginia in 2008, we’ve grown to six locations in Central Virginia, including five in the Charlottesville area and one in Richmond. We have navigated plenty of twists and turns along the way, but are driven ahead knowing that our coffee provides fuel for o

thers blazing their own paths. As a roaster we search the world over to establish relationships with great farmers cultivating great coffees, and we roast them with craft and care — believing that only the best cup is good enough for the journey ahead.

Earlier this Spring, our Vice President & Head of Coffee, Travis, traveled to Costa Rica’s West Valley coffee region to spend time with producers, strengthen relationships, and select coffees for future releases.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing highlights from his trip and introducing some of the people and places behind the coffees we source.

First up: Las Lajas Micromill. Located in the hills of Sabanilla de Alajuela, Las Lajas is a longtime leader in Costa Rican specialty coffee and a producer we’re proud to work with.

After visiting the farm and spending time with the Las Lajas team, Travis selected a lot that stood out for its balance, sweetness, and complexity.

Now featured on our summer menu as our Iced Pour Over (also available hot), this is a small glimpse into the work Travis does behind the scenes to bring exceptional coffees from around the world to our shops.

Meet our General Manager, Sophie!☕️

Sophie joined our team as a barista six years ago, and after several leadership roles, stepped into the GM role six months ago. She keeps our shops running smoothly and our coffee culture strong — supporting the team behind the bar, and watching each location build its own community.

Her go-to drink is an iced coffee with vanilla, and her favorite coffee is our Night Shift — despite insisting for years she wasn't a dark roast person.🤣

Outside of Grit, you'll find Sophie volunteering at a horse rescue, enjoying live music, or heading downtown for dinner and ice cream. Say hey next time you see her around our shops!👋
