Rest well, Wendell. Thank you for teaching so many of us how to look.

Wendell Berry spent a lifetime paying attention: to soil, to seasons, to the slow, unglamorous work of a pear ripening on a branch. He believed that kind of noticing was a discipline, and that it could change how a person lives.

He was also a fighter, for small farms, for rural communities, for the idea that land is worth protecting even when protecting it is inconvenient or unprofitable. In The Hidden Wound, he wrote with unflinching honesty about the damage of racism, insisting that reckoning with it was inseparable from reckoning with how we treat land and labor. Loving a place, to him, meant standing up for it.

So many of us have been deeply inspired by the messages in his prolific poetry, essays, and books. That stewardship is a form of love, not just labor. That land teaches you what it needs, if you're willing to listen. That growing things, done right, asks for patience most of all.

She was loud about it — about loving and honoring working people, poor people, and the dignity of everyone.

Long before the rhinestones, she was a farmer’s daughter in the Tennessee mountains. She never let money or fame talk her out of where she came from, and she spoke openly about protecting the land and the mountains she grew up in.

She backed LGBTQ+ and trans people out loud, because to her, love was just love and family was just family. She funded a library that mails free books to children for free — over 100 million of them and counting. She helped raise more than $9 million for families who lost their homes in the 2016 Tennessee wildfires. She turned down the Presidential Medal of Freedom twice, saying plainly, “I don’t work for those awards.”

She was unapologetic about where she came from, who she loved, and who she was. Rhinestones, twang, and all.

Rest easy, Dolly. Thank you for the spakle and the backbone, both at full volume. Thank you for finding the words for what it means to work hard when the odds, and the system, are stacked against you.

Thanks, from us at Glynwood, who think every day about how our auctions speak louder than our words, and to speak boldly and plainly as she did.

In loving memory of Dolly Parton, 1946–2026

🌱 Healthy farms start with healthy crops, and that begins with knowing what to look for.

Our Hudson Valley Apprentice cohort joined Ethan Grundberg of the Eastern New York Commercial Horticulture team for a training on the basics of plant pests and diseases at The Barns at Vassar and Poughkeepsie Farm Project.

Together, they reviewed and learned the identification processes for the most common insect pests and bacterial, fungal, viral, and abiotic diseases in fruit and vegetable production in the Hudson Valley.

During a field walk of Poughkeepsie Farm Project, the cohort scouted for and identified pathogens and discussed how to use ID keys and what to do once an identification has been made.

Thank you Ethan for sharing your expertise and foundational knowledge with our apprentices!

Our Annual Benefit is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and we’re asking our community to show up for us. Every ticket purchase is meaningful.

To those who can support us at one of the higher ticket levels: your ticket funds our work well beyond the celebration of the evening. Going up a level means more of your gift goes directly to farmers and the future of food in the Hudson Valley. Looking forward to seeing so many of you on September 19h!

Rotational grazing gives our livestock access to fresh forage while allowing grazed pastures time to rest and recover. It's a simple practice with lasting benefits—for animal welfare, healthy soils, invasive species management, and resilient farmland.
