Rosemary, sage, thyme, and oregano can slowly get woody if they’re never trimmed 🌿 A few pruning habits I follow:
✂️ Trim mainly into the leafy green growth instead of cutting hard into old bare wood.
🌱 Removing growing tips encourages branching and helps herbs stay fuller.
🤏 I avoid taking more than roughly one-third of the plant at once during routine trimming.
☀️ Regular light harvesting through the growing season is often better than one severe haircut.
🌿 Rosemary and some other woody herbs may not reliably push new growth from old leafless stems, so aggressive cuts can leave bare sections behind.
🧼 Clean, sharp pruners make the job easier and reduce unnecessary stem damage.
Small trims throughout the season usually keep perennial herbs much nicer than waiting until they’re woody and overgrown.
