🎉 WE HAVE AN EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT… MEET ZAFI! 🎉

Sometimes an animal comes into your life and you just know they were meant to be there. ❤️

We are so excited to welcome Zafi, a 2½-year-old Central Asian Shepherd, originally from Serbia, all the way to our farm and family. She comes to us from Ascent Central Asian Shepherds near Colorado Springs, Colorado, bringing exceptional bloodlines and already playing a role in preserving this rare breed in the United States.

Zafi also has a beautiful daughter still in Colorado with Rachel at Ascent Central, and we’re truly looking forward to watching her legacy continue.

Rachel’s farm is an incredible place dedicated to conservation and preservation, home to yaks, mammoth donkeys, and even solid charcoal-black pigs—an amazing example of her work in livestock conservancy.

We feel so fortunate to have Zafi here. She’s settling in beautifully and beginning to find her place with us.

Once her training is complete, she’ll join Dixie in helping protect our flock and farm. 🐓🛡️

Welcome home, Zafi. ❤️

Another one of my absolute favorites… ❤️

Meet Thor. 🐓💪🏼

Thor is a Belgian Liège Fighter, and he’s been part of our farm for about 4½ years. At roughly 15 pounds of solid muscle, he is an absolute powerhouse of a rooster—and somehow, one of the gentlest birds we have. ❤️

This breed is truly the definition of a gentleman. They’re calm, kind, and incredibly respectful of their people and their hens. But when it comes to protecting their girls? They mean business.

Belgian Liège Fighters are exceptionally predator-savvy, and they have a remarkable reputation for protecting their flocks from aerial predators. Hawks and owls don’t get an easy target when one of these guys is on duty.

And those FEET. 😳

Their feet can be nearly the size of a man’s hand, and combined with their enormous, muscular, athletic bodies, they have the physical ability to put up a serious fight when their flock is threatened.

But perhaps my favorite thing about them is that their fierceness is so beautifully selective.

I would trust these roosters around children and visitors more readily than almost any other roosters on our farm. They can be absolute warriors when their hens need them, while remaining sweet, gentle gentlemen with the people they know.

Thor is about 15 lbs, while Loki is right around 12–13 lbs—and honestly, Loki is even MORE athletic than this big guy! 😂

This is a breed we absolutely LOVE. ❤️

They’re impressive, intelligent, protective, athletic, gentle, and just downright incredible birds.

We only wish we could share this amazing breed with the whole world. 🐓 They are truly something special.

🙌⭐️Thank goodness for this amazing little broody hen that I showed in my video yesterday! Dorthy adopted the little orphan, and is happy to take it in as her own.

So grateful! 🌟🫶💞

Judy (my first pick to be a mom since I’ve deprived her for years) was having NO part of it! 😂😂

I did NOT have chick hatching in my bandwidth for this day…. 😳🤦🏻‍♀️🤯

I’d sure like to know who’s responsible for this…

🌟The Rosecomb Bantam has to be one of my all-time favorite chicken breeds. 🥹❤️

They’re tiny, adorable, gentle, and so easy to handle, making them a fantastic choice for youth just getting started in poultry. If a full-sized chicken feels a little intimidating, a Rosecomb can be the perfect confidence builder. They’re sweet, manageable, and full of personality.

This little lady stopped by today for a nail trim, and I couldn’t resist sharing her with all of you. Just look at that face! 🥰

Sometimes it’s the smallest chickens that leave the biggest impression. ❤️🐓

Success stories like this are exactly why we do what we do. ❤️🐓

Every spring, one of our favorite things is helping youth find birds they can truly be successful with in the show ring. We just received an amazing update from a family who picked up chicks from us earlier this year, and we couldn’t be more proud!

For their very first year showing poultry, these kids had an incredible weekend:

🏆 Reserve Champion Large Fowl – Sicilian Buttercup Pullet
🏆 Reserve Champion – Dominique
🏆 Champion & Reserve Champion in class – Black Ameraucanas (2) & Splash Ameraucana
🏆 Grand Champion Showmanship with a Sicilian Buttercup pullet

While ribbons are exciting, they’re never the best part.

The real victory is everything these kids learned along the way. They spent months caring for their birds, providing excellent nutrition, evaluating feather quality, studying comb types, learning correct leg color, and deciding which birds gave them the best opportunity to represent their flock. Those are lessons in responsibility, observation, patience, sportsmanship, and dedication that will stay with them long after the fair is over.

That’s why we always encourage parents to consider getting their child at least one high-quality bird. It isn’t about guaranteeing a ribbon—it’s about giving them the opportunity to learn, grow, build confidence, and develop a lifelong passion for their animals.

Watching young exhibitors succeed because of their own hard work is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

Congratulations to these amazing kids! We’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see what you accomplish next. ❤️🎉

✨When people say that they “support local producers and community,” what does that actually mean?? To Steve and I, THIS is what COMMUNITY and kindness looks like... ❤️ ⭐️

Every day, grocery stores and restaurants throw away enormous amounts of food. These items should be feeding families, elderly, those who may be struggling, and even those who are doing just fine… Every single one of us is a part of the food system, and the epidemic of food waste affects everyone.

To solve this problem, there’s an awesome organization in Nebraska that many people don’t know about…. FoodNet! 🤩🍎🫶

🍎FoodNet rescues the foods that would normally be thrown away, and distributes it to anyone who wants to participate, with no requirements for eligibility, preventing it from being sent to the landfill. All for FREE!! EVERYONE IS WELCOME, and the foods they receive are incredible!!

Anyone who comes can choose from a huge variety of fresh, nutritious food at no cost- and better yet? Absolutely NOTHING goes to waste!! 🤩🤑

🌟Here’s the cool part… Items that come damaged, bruised, or can’t be distributed aren’t thrown away! Those items are set aside, then shared with local farmers- like us at Bartlett Chicken Ranch!

Those “imperfect” foods?? Our chickens happily turn those over-ripe peaches, bruised apples, and smooshed tomatoes into beautiful, nutritious eggs.

With the extra nutrition, not only does it provide us savings in feed cost, but our chickens turn around and produce extra eggs! Bonus!! 🤩🤑🥚🍳 With those savings, our farm is then able donate fresh eggs back to FoodNet, as well as other local families who are in need of food assistance- at no cost. 💞🫶

FoodNet has created a program that goes beyond simply reducing food waste… We have made some amazing friends while volunteering, and the program creates a community where we can all give a little, and create an impact that reaches far beyond what we could achieve alone.

FoodNet’s mission, “Fill Tummies, NOT Landfills,” is one that we wholeheartedly believe in. Every rescued apple, bruised tomato, or imperfect head of lettuce has value. Every dozen eggs donated back proves that what some may see as “waste” can be transformed into something incredible.🍳🎂🍨🥨

We’re so grateful to FoodNet for their dedication to their mission, and to businesses like Costco, Whole Foods, Tabitha, local bakeries, restaurants, and so many of the other local FoodNet partners who choose generosity over garbage.

Together, those partnerships are not only feeding local families, they’re supporting local farms and agriculture, creating numerous resources, providing volunteer opportunities, amazing friendships, community service, and proving that the best solutions often come from people working together to make the world a little brighter.

We grew up being told, “Waste not, Want Not.” Steve and I will always be willing to help feed a friend, our neighbors, or a stranger... 🥚❤️ 🌱 Less waste. More kindness. Stronger community. A mission we are proud to be a part of. 🌟
