As I've said I sometimes think I need to answer my phone, "911 what's your emergency"

This morning a woman contacted me about her young female dog that became very sick with 105 fever a couple of weeks ago. She went to the vet and asked for bloodwork and x-rays to see what was wrong. The bloodwork was done but when they found out she didn't have any money x-rays were not done.

Her white blood count was way up so they suspected maybe pneumonia or spinal meningitis. She was given injections of antibiotic, a steroid and a pain med. When the woman couldn't even pay for that they refused giving more meds for ongoing treatment.

The dog felt better after the injections but is deteriorating and unfortunately the woman has been calling and being ridiculously rude and demanding of the staff at the clinic. The clinic made the decision to no longer treat her dog in the future.

Of course I know the clinic and in fact that's where Chaos is being neutered today. I pick him up at 3P so I called the clinic to find out exactly what transpired with this woman and her sick dog.

I agreed to pay her $200 bill for bloodwork and injections and they will fill all the prescriptions the dog needs to get her well. The total bill will be around $250. I will meet this lady on my way back to the sanctuary and give her the meds her dog desperately needs.

She was very grateful for my help, and I told her that because of the way she treated staff at the clinic they will no longer work with her. I told her if the dog does not improve with the meds to let me know and we will get her to another vet, but I will be the one to correspond with them and not her.

I'm doing this for the dog that clinic staff told me was so sweet and not for the owner Although they said it was obvious the owner really cared about her dog. This dog also had parvo a while back so she is going to need vacs when she's well and I will insist on it.

Here’s a story that I really have few details about but here’s what I know as of now.

This dog was chained and his owner died. The girlfriend of the owner didn’t know what to do with him but somehow a young man heard about his plight. The young man recently gave up his dog to a friend of mine because he couldn’t care for it properly. He’s basically homeless and people that hired him to do odd jobs would let him stay with them while working and right now he’s staying in an outbuilding at another friend of mine.

So now he has this dog because he felt so bad for it so obviously he does have a compassionate heart in spite of his situation. The dog is a male under the age of 1 year and looks to be a Pit mix. He isn’t neutered and most likely never had any vaccinations.

When I was made aware of this story I agreed to pay for neuter and vacs, and he has a vet appointment today to have that done. Because the young man that took him doesn’t drive my friend is taking Chaos (his name...go figure) to the vet this morning. I will pick him up this afternoon and take him to the young man where he’s currently staying.

My friend met the dog briefly and says he seems like a nice dog. Being kept outside and chained he could very well have some issues that need to be dealt with but we’ll see.

I’ve never met the young man but will this afternoon when I take the dog back to him. I’ll see if I can figure out what his plan is for Chaos. He's already given up his dog because he couldn't care for it so it doesn't make sense he would keep this one. I’ve already said I’m not taking this dog but will network him if need be.

Two years and three months ago my dog Daisy delivered seven puppies…..two males and five females. I was waiting for her to turn one year old before spaying her. While she was in heat the neighbor’s Rhodesian Ridgeback came to visit and jumped the fence into my yard. Since then both have been spayed and neutered.

The neighbor that owned the dad took two of the pups…one female and one male. I kept Junior and the other 4 all found wonderful homes.

This video shows how far apart my neighbor and I live. It’s not all that far as the crow flies but several fences are in between us but it definitely is a jaunt. Bantu, Junior’s brother, comes over from time to time. They love each other and love to play. My neighbor recently put in fences, but does take her dogs off leash at times to walk on her 125 acres. They usually stay home but sometimes one or two do show up here.

In the morning Junior often goes to our fence line, looks toward Bantu’s home and starts barking. I’m certain he’s saying, “Bantu! Come on over and bring our sister Zula if you want. Let’s play!!” Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn’t.

If it does work I get a text that Bantu is on his way. I typically reply that it’s ok and he can stay and play for a while. When he arrives Junior climbs over my fence, and they play in my front yard. Eventually his mom comes over to get him.

It’s kinda like having ranch kids that like to visit and play with each other lol. It’s ok as long as I’m home.

I got an email from Wisdom Panel the company I had Barkley’s DNA analyzed. Apparently they have done some upgrading and able to do more extensive testing. Below is a link to Barkley’s new results. Talk about a dog mixed with almost every breed on the planet!! Make sure you look at ALL his breeds listed to get the full scope.

And relatives are also shown on Wisdom Panel. He has three very close relatives….one in Nevada that is a year older than Barkley, one in Utah that appears to be a littermate of the one in Nevada and one in Grand Junction that is almost 7 yrs old.

For a dog that was supposedly found on a canal bank with his litter that were only hours old I find it strange. Wisdom Panel has a link to email owners of relatives so I’m about to do that to see where they got their dogs. Hopefully I get some answers as to Barkley’s origin.

Barkley is now 2 years and 4 months old. How time flies! He becomes very protective of me after dark. It’s like something sparks inside him and he notices every move in the dark. I was researching the Pyrenees breed, and they are very nocturnal because they were bred to guard flocks of sheep when predators come out at night.

His wrinkled face reflects the Sharpei, his body looks similar to the Pit Bull terrier mixes, his eyes are droopy and finally his ears have matched up lol. He used to be fairly uncoordinated but as he’s aged he’s become much more agile like a herding dog.

I love this dog with all my heart and our relationship is like none I’ve ever had before with a dog. I’m sure it’s because I’ve had him since he was 3 days old, bottle fed him and he was the only survivor in his litter.

I’m now at the hospital waiting to get a mammogram and blood draw ordered by my doctor after my annual exam. Squished b***s and needles….ugh!

Dilemmas of a lady rancher..........

It’s been three weeks since I last saw the nail tech that re-did my fake nails I got while in Texas. While there my daughters talked me into getting a set because they couldn't believe how awful my natural ones looked.

At the last appointment she removed the acrylic ones and replaced them with extensions. The plan was for my naturals nails be protected so they could grow out and working with my actual nail do something called “gel build”. I have an appointment today.

While installing that mammoth 10’ gate the same nail popped off that came off while loading hay onto the tractor. After digging on my hands and knees in the hay barn, I found it stuck in a hay bail and glued it back on. This time when it came off I’m digging in the dirt, found it and once again glued it back on. That nail has taken a real beating and looks pretty rough. What an oxymoron to have beautiful long nails that look like I live a pampered life and in reality my life couldn't be further from it because it's more like that of a farmer/mechanic.

The nail tech gave me a nail brush and cuticle oil to keep my nails clean, but because they get so dirty by day's end I have to use a bristled floor scrub brush I detached from a mop to clean them!

As I’ve said, “I love the look of these fake nails.” But my lifestyle does not work easily with them. We’ll see what she suggests this time….I’m not ready to give them up just yet! Maybe shorter……

Time for some updates on the dogs that came my way and found their forever homes through our amazing Taco Bell Angel network.

Ben the 10 year old Cocker Spaniel, Chance the traveling 1 1/2 year old 5 lb Chihuahua that I had to trap to catch, Casey the stray Brittany Spaniel that showed up on a ranch nearby and Kimo, one of the 6 mo old Akbash brothers that were rescued by kayakers, all found amazing homes with help from you followers!

Ben was put into the Silver Whiskers Program and now lives in Grand Junction with his retired mom and dad. He’s doing wonderful and the photo is he and his mom on a camping trip. What a great life he is having!

Chance is living in Orchard City with his mom, her son, two female Chihuahuas and two cats. He was much like a feral dog for months so I was amazed how quickly he has adapted to his new family.

This update from his mom: “Great news. Gus (new name) is heart worm negative. Chihuahuas are so funny about heating pads and electric blankets. I am beading and looked down and who wrapped up in a heating pad? Augustus! He is so cute and has claimed us all as his pack.”

Tanuki, AKA Casey, now lives in Crested Butte, CO with his mom and finally has the love and care he deserves after being out on his own in the elements as a stray. This update from his owner.

“Tanuki is doing great. We stopped along Kebler Pass and walked around a little on our way home yesterday. When we got home he climbed up on the couch and slept all night, didn’t make a peep, and had no accidents. We went for our morning walk and he relieved himself, everything looked healthy. He sticks right by me, comes with a quick whistle and is just the sweetest. We’re going to take it easy till his paw heals up. Thank you for connecting us, he’s a great dog!”

Kimo is living in Cedaredge with his dad and 6 year old male Malamute companion. He and his new brother are getting along great and love to play. This update from his dad:
“The boys are getting along great and he is not wild at all. Housetrained and let’s me know when he needs to go potty. He walks on leash like a gentleman.”

I could not be happier for them all! And....all is quiet again here at the sanctuary.

Just when I thought I had a day with nothing planned I find that one of my small freezers has gone out! Not everything was thawed but a hell of a lot was!

A lot of cooking to do today!! Always something.....

P.S. The bad news is the freezer went out. The good news is that I was able to move the still frozen meat to the other freezers and by end of day I will have 3 days of dog food made in advance!

The rain didn’t last long yesterday so I waited till the ground dried out enough to get back to work putting the mother of all gates in place.

My friend bought a group of chain link panels from someone and in it was this gate that she gave me after hearing I needed one. When she said it was 10’ tall and 6’ wide I thought it was chain link panel with a regular gate at the end of it like most are. But no….that was just the gate! Just to reach the latch to open and close it I have to stand on my tippy toes.

I’m still trying to imagine what that gate was originally purchased for. It weighs at least 75 pounds, and it’s so tall I honestly think even a giraffe could easily go through it.

Just to get it to the spot I needed took me forever. I would try to gently push or pull or lift it with the front end forks on the tractor. It was much wider than the opening I had to get it through so I had to physically put it on its horizontal side and push it with all my might.

Once through that opening I had to drive my tractor into that horse field where it was going so now I have that horse race problem again with my inquisitive horse and donkeys lol. But I was smart enough this time to close the gate to that field.

I had to drag the mother gate to get in position to lift it with the tractor. Once in place I used the tractor to lift it up into the air….10 feet tall…so I could attach it to the drill stem fence pipe. It took hours to get it in exactly the right spot and if I moved the tractor just too many inches it would fall over. I even got the tractor forks a couple of times so far into the chain link it got stuck.

Kyra was sitting on my tractor with me the whole time and I’m talking to her while trying to work through this. She’s just looking at me with her soulful eyes as if saying, “Mom…I wish I could help you.”

David used to tell me that he should video me when I’m trying to work through accomplishing something. He said it was very entertaining to listen to. Apparently I talk to myself and when I get frustrated I have a potty mouth.

Bottomline…the mother of all gates is in so I now have access to the horse field when I need it and the “shelter tunnel” is in place so I can move my dogs from the house to the shelter when I want! That 10’ tall gate is definitely an eye sore though lol.
