🥬Someone recently pointed out that we have all of the same crops as their neighboring small vegetable farms... while we personally dream of growing mangos and pana, we live in New Jersey, and we pride ourselves on only selling what we can grow here, which will be similar to what your other farmers in NJ are growing...

💪🏽So we want to congratulate all of you folks out there who commit to eating locally and seasonally because it is TOTALLY hard. It means eating the same things for a period of time then doing without them for another period of time. It means giving up some things altogether and sharing the disappointments when the weather lets us down. Sometimes it means going out of your way to access your food because the supermarket isn’t buying local, then educating yourself on how to store, prepare, and preserve things you might not be familiar with at first.

🌱Why would anyone want to go through all of that? Because you care about the nutritional quality of your food, you care about not consuming toxins, you care about how the production of your food affects the land it is grown in and the other organisms that live there, you care that the production of your food doesn’t take advantage of other people, and you care that your money stays in your community.

🌾To be a farmer you have to be comfortable with being a little uncomfortable...to support a local, non-industrial, ethical food system, you have to be comfortable with changing the way you think about food.

✨We appreciate YOU, our seasonal eating warriors!

🥒Endlessly learning and improving…a successful trial of tunnel cucumbers. We grow early and late greens, tomatoes, basil, celery, ginger, turmeric, and now cucumbers and summer herbs in our 4 unheated tunnels.

✨These tunnels protect sensitive crops from frost, reduce disease pressure caused by fungal diseases that spread on wet leaves, and because we use shade cloth, create a cooler environment in the summer.

✨All of our tunnels were funded through NRCS grants. Because we built them ourselves, we put up one each year to spread out the work. With all of the tunnels complete this year, we are really able to dial in how we want to manage them.

🦠The downsides of high tunnel growing include the build up of salts and disease because the soil isn’t exposed to the action of natural rain that helps to flush the soil.

🌾🐓Our next step is to dial in a system to create our own mulch from our woodland spaces that will allow us to eliminate the use of landscape fabric, increase organic matter, and reduce the mugwort apocalypse that occurs each year. We also plan to build in a fallow or rest tunnel that we will overwinter animals in to help further build the soil.

🌾Endless gratitude for Devin for helping us trial some specialty equipment through their equipment share program!

🌾Our mission here is resiliency. We want to put food on your table whatever the weather, whatever the political agenda, whatever the economic situation. It might not be perfect food, but there will be nourishing, safe, clean food.

🌾 A huge part of this vision is to reduce off- farm inputs, use what we have, and find unique tools that really fit our scale and needs.

🌾 Out of our 8 acres only 4 is ideal for annual production, the remaining peripheral areas are beautiful spaces full of natural gifts to help keep our system thriving. Here is a small space that produced a perfect amount of hay for our new friends arriving in August 🐑

🌾We will now also be able to make our own chemical-free straw for mulching vegetables!
