As nucleus hive sales for 2026 draw to a close, our focus is shifting from inspecting, moving, and selling five-frame NUCs to managing ten-frame hives and preparing for honey production by "supering up" (adding honey supers for fall extraction). Photographs from a recent yard inspection, conducted to determine the salability of five-frame NUCs, are below. The queen's laying pattern is a key indicator of readiness for sale.

We are grateful to see that the honeybees were looking good. The favorable weather, paired with how strong the honeybees looked, allowed us to complete the inspection of 432 hives within a two-day period. In consideration of the limited blooming flora in CA during this time of year, we provided a pound of pollen substitute per hive. The patties come slightly scored, and we further scored them to aid the bees in accessing the patty. Following grading, sorting, and feeding, the hives were loaded onto a truck and moved to an almond grove.

We made it safely to CA. It is very foggy this morning, which made it difficult to find the holding yard.

Now to get the smoker lit and to start checking the beehives. We will look to see if dead or alive and if alive…determine strength.

The picture below is the result of melting our cappings from extraction this past fall. The cappings are warmed up to liquify and separate the remaining honey from the beeswax. After liquid, the beeswax is filtered to remove impurities which yeilds a beautiful (and fragrant) light beeswax ready for pouring into molds. Beeswax is great for making lip balm (used in our homemade lip balm), lotions and candles.

The majority of our hives have been collected. This is when they are inspected to see how strong they are, fed, moved around (indiviual hives to other pallets) and mouse guards installed. This is the start of the process to get the hives prepared to ship to CA where they will pollenated almonds. Pictures were taken by Tim Blomenberg.

Occasionally, unexpected challenges arise at bee yards. This particular situation required considerable time to expose the hives from the overgrowth of giant ragweed, velvet leaf, and foxtail. Fortunately, the truck was equipped with snips and a limb saw, which helped speed up the process.

Out at a couple yards taking off supers of honey (extra honey-two deep boxes are left for the bees). After the supers are off, a hive is checked for mites to better understand the health of the hive. Packing up and headed back to unload for the evening.

Knives remove the beeswax caps from the frame to release the honey. The knives are adjusted to try to preserve as much comb as possible for the honeybees to use next year.
