Fresh Food Programs Launch This Summer in Petersburg
Beginning in June, Petersburg residents will have expanded access to free fresh fruits and vegetables through several community programs designed to improve health, reduce food insecurity, and support local farmers.
Free Produce for Seniors
Eligible older adults can receive a one-time $50 Farm Market Fresh benefit through Virginia’s Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program. Benefits may be used to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs from authorized farmers at River Street Market in Old Towne Petersburg.
Residents can apply now through November while supplies last. For information, contact Lenice Sudds at (804) 433-3059 or [email protected].
Food Is Medicine Program
The Market at PPL is enrolling Petersburg adults with chronic health conditions and limited access to healthy food in the Food Is Medicine program. Fifty participants will receive a $75 produce voucher each month for six months to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
Applications must be completed in June at the Market at PPL, located at 201 W. Washington Street.
SUN Bucks and SNAP Discounts
Families with eligible children may receive $120 in summer grocery assistance through the SUN Bucks program. Benefits can be used at participating retailers and local farmers markets.
In Petersburg, River Street Market doubles SNAP and SUN Bucks benefits, while the Market at PPL offers 50% off fruits and vegetables purchased with SNAP/EBT.
These programs are facilitated locally by River Street Education and Virginia Fresh Match to increase access to healthy food while supporting local agriculture and community wellness.
