We have one budget rule that might be a little controversial: we don't spend money without talking to each other first. It doesn't matter if it's $100 or a $1 brownie. We actually fell into this habit naturally and realized how much it helped us stay on the same page. Neither one of us holds the purse strings—we both have a say in our money and our goals. It stops money arguments before they start. I know it wouldn't work for everyone, but it works for us. What's one money rule that works really well for you and your spouse?

We never thought we could really lower our electric bill. Then we were able to see our actual usage, and that changed everything. We got down to around 550 kWh a month, but Aaron wanted to see if we could get it lower. So we started tracking our big appliances on the calendar. We found out the washing machine barely pulls anything, but the stove is one of our biggest energy drains. On days we use it, our usage can double! Now we use the Instant Pot more and when we turn on the stove, we're loading that thing up. What's the biggest energy user you've found in your house?

One of the big expenses we cut about 5 years ago was our personal care budget. Julia was GOOD at the CVS ExtraBucks game, and we'd spend about $40 a month getting things "next to free." The problem? We were buying things because they were a good deal, not because we needed them. At one point, Julia had TWO shoeboxes of nail polish she would never use in a lifetime. We eventually threw it away. How much money did we really save if we bought it just to throw it away? Now we might spend $5 every few months, if that. What's a "deal" you've bought that wasn't really a deal?

I'm always trying to stretch a dollar and make food my people actually love, and this is one of those meals that does both. I take my favorite bread recipe, add chicken I got on sale for $1, cheese, and a LOT of seasoning before the second rise, then roll it up and bake it. About $1.50 for the bread, $1 for the chicken, $1 for the cheese, plus seasoning—and it feeds us for days. What's your favorite cheap meal that doesn't feel cheap?

One of our best little money-saving habits is only shopping once a week. If I find something online that I want, it goes in the cart and usually sits there until the end of the month. By then, half the time I don't even want it anymore! 😂 We make exceptions when we actually need something or there's a sale worth waiting for. I'm doing that right now with our deodorant because I know it will be cheaper soon. What little shopping rule has saved you money?

Proof that "free and functional" beats "pretty and expensive" every time!

I made this clothespin holder out of a hanger, leftover thread, and scrap fabric. Looks a little silly, but it works great on the line and didn't cost a dime to make.
