Yesterday the girls were released from “Chicken Prison.” We’ve seen no sign of a momma fox hunting during the days this spring so after two months-ish of being confined to their coop and run, the girls are free to explore, eat bugs, nap in the gardens and basically do whatever they please. Blaze the rooster was very excited to have them back outside with him…I doubt they were happy to see him…

The “Claw Down” at Sample’s Boatyard in Boothbay Harbor last night was the place to be. Every summer local restaurants pull out all the stops to be chosen for the best “lobster bite.” Eight competitors, a whole lot of lobster, creativity and a lot of time goes into this event.
Johanna and I had a great time bumping into friends and making new ones - and you can be sure we loved having all that lobster. We also enjoyed the gorgeous charcuterie board created by the lovely Betty whom you remember from our February annual open house.
It was a chilly evening and the rain came blowing in but that doesn’t stop Mainers and visitors from a good time!

Haven’t heard yet who won - we both voted for HarborSide 1901 Bar & Grill (the first 4 photos). Their entire display was edible with the exception of the rocks that the bites were placed upon. The sand was panko! The flavors were lovely and we knew right away it was our favorite. There were others that were exceptional both in flavor and presentation. Bluebird Ocean Point Inn was my second favorite.

Johanna has single handedly created and maintained this gorgeous flower garden at our family cottage over the years. Who needs the Botanical Gardens when there are two-story high rhododendrons, giant hostas, peonies, poppies and more? Thank you to our friend Susan Whitehouse for helping Johanna this spring - who has been gardening while wearing her clunky boot. What a trooper.

George and I are back on the farm after a wonderful trip to Florida to see Andrew graduate from police academy last Thursday. He is now a Deputy Sheriff for Citrus County where he lives with Gabrielle and their 2 year old son Henry.

I am unbelievably proud of both of my children, they have grown into exceptional people. How lucky can a mom be, seriously, I am grateful.
Now to get back into the swing of farm life and relieve Heather, Johanna, Sumner and Julie of all that they did daily to take care of the 40ish creatures who live here (I don’t know the exact chicken headcount because they never stand still).

P.S. A couple of days before we returned, Tilly & Dilly (our 9 month old piggy sisters) found another way to escape their pen and greeted Johanna at the farmstand when she was closing up! Thank goodness they were good little pigs and by shaking a container of grain, they followed Johanna back to their “bedroom.”

A second shout out of grateful thanks goes to our daughter Heather (abt 2 yo in this picture) who is taking care of 90%+ of the animal care while we are away - cats, dogs, goats, piglets, chickens, a duck, a goose, a horse and a cow. That’s lot of measuring, food bowls, buckets, water bowls and water jugs, etc! Johanna is covering here and there when Heather has a 12 hour day at Fisherman’s Wharf but Heather is carrying the bulk.
Friends Julie , Sumner and Nora have filled in gaps TOO. It really takes a village in order to go away. I can’t thank you all enough.

They can all breathe a sigh of relief on Tuesday when we get home❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

This past Tuesday George and I flew to Florida for our son Andrew‘s graduation from police academy which will be this evening at 6PM.

We brought Maine lobsters for a treat and they were, of course, delicious! Thank you Atlantic Edge in Boothbay Harbor for cooking and packing 8 of them for us to carry on the plane ~ the box was a tad smaller than a carry on suitcase so we cruised right through. That night we simply dunked them in hot water to warm them through before serving. Perfect.

I can’t help but wonder if lobsters direct from Maine have ever crossed this threshold.

Last week some folks from North Carolina and Virginia stopped by the farmstand, I recognized Eileen, Bill, Anne and Tom as soon as they stepped out of their car (which is amazing because my old overloaded brain doesn’t usually come through when I need it to-I apologize for the blank stare that some of you get when you greet me by name).

I had met them two summers ago when I happened to be in the driveway as they drove in, they were delightful and interested in what we do here so I had taken them on a tour of the farm.

They were hoping we had lobster stew in the farmstand to take to Eileen’s Aunt Dorothy in Connecticut (Anne’s mother) ~ who is the one who 40 years ago introduced them to our beautiful part of the world, midcoast Maine. Dorothy is 97 and of course we would make lobster stew especially for her.

It was waiting for them in the farmstand when their week was over and Eileen sent me this photo of her Aunt Dorothy enjoying the stew. Evidently she was enthralled and never said a word, she just kept taking another spoonful. Eileen said she was sorry she didn’t get a photo of Dorothy as she held the bowl to her lips to drink what was left at the bottom.

The rest of lobster stew sold out quickly. We don’t keep it in stock but we are happy to make a batch anytime, just ask. The price varies based on the daily market price for lobster.

Happy to be home with the animals both big and small but truly missing my brother and his incredibly wonderful family after a beautiful wedding weekend celebrating Tory & Devin. Johanna and I shared a room at the Airbnb and continuously laughed ourselves silly to the point we couldn’t breath - her husband came in two different nights to see what was so funny.
We will reopen the farmstand tomorrow morning at 10am.
