Broody Baby 1 hatched 5 days ago in 109° during a record setting heat wave. Broody Baby 2 hatched this morning in 64° as a hurricane makes landfall here for only the second time in the last 100 years, in a smooshed egg under a foster broody after being an abandoned egg twice.

Reminder: Life is persistent AF. Opening your incubator for 15 seconds did not kill all your chicks.

Fellow SoCal peeps - we've got a page SoCal Chick Fests that lists all the chicken events around here, and lemme tell you, people are doing an AMAZING JOB!! Give it a follow.

Who needs Farmfest anyway?? We've been vendors at several, and have placed so many birds. Its been awesome.

There's a group as well to join to see events as they come up that are looking for vendors ‐ SoCal Chick Fests Group.

VERY interested in seeing where this goes. We've used Flockstar for a couple years and love it, and having a way to sell live animals without risking terms violations here will be a game changer.

Dear customers waiting for orders - our internet is down, and its causing a delay in printing and mailing orders. 😬😫

AT&T decided to park outside our house and break something, and then proceed to give zero sh*ts about fixing it. We'll be without internet for at least a week while they take their sweet time.

We will figure out how to get labels and orders printed and sent, and please accept our apologies if yours is delayed.

Sometimes we don't get what we expected, but we get something really cool anyway. Do I need a splash boy? No. Will I keep him anyway and see how he grows up? Absolutely. I mean... look at him!

I want to share some encouragement to my fellow newbs in this breeding thing:

We don't start with perfection - we make it.

Its really easy to get caught up in the pursuit of finding and buying that "perfect bird" that's going to transform our breeding program and fix all our woes. We look at what we're producing, and we just aren't happy with it; we're always our own worst critic. So we sell a bunch of what we have and try to buy better. Ive done it, I'll do it again, and I'll remind myself of this forever I suspect.

Are you a breeder, or a buyer? Its honestly OK to be either, but if you are a BREEDER - remind yourself that the whole point is to mold and shape it *yourself.* To assemble birds with parts and pieces of your vision, and watch that vision emerge over time.

Here's something I'm super proud of. A few years ago I won the boy on the left in an auction. He had a ton of great qualities we needed, and he absolutely transformed our program - large full crest, huge cushion, wide, and black as night. AND he had a flagpole sticking out of his butt that he passed onto everything. We worked with it. We kept one of his son's that was an improvement (middle), and bred him back to girls with beautiful fluffy cushions.

And HIS sons are this coming year's breeding cockbirds. They have their grandfather's giant, gorgeous cushion, without the flagpole. There's still work to be done (wings) and they arent perfect, but they are our creation. They are our hard work. And when I put them next to another breeder's better bird, I still feel closer and more appreciative of them, because they are our vision coming to life.

It took two full years, and will take more years still. It's not immediate gratification, which is the lure of just buying one. But it's way, way more fulfilling.

Self Blue Satin frizzles? I am getting some pretty decently typed ones from our variety pen, but I low-key dislike the feather quality - skinny and collapsed. This is a self blue thing, not a general satin thing. My smooth self blues are better, but I can see it there, too.

Anyone manage to get improved feather quality here? I'm guessing we've got a lot of work to do on this in self blue Satins... Silkie feathering hides that feather shredding thing and we can't select away from it.
