Portsmouth Market Square Day nine years ago when my now adult kiddos were just teenagers and peddled garlic with me under the tent on Congress Street. I don't speak "time" language, that is to say, the clock and earth have ticked, turned, spun, revolved, and orbited many times since what feels in this mom's heart & brain like yesterday.
Anyway, join the memory-making happening tomorrow in downtown Portsmouth, NH.

Portsmouth Market Square Day is this Saturday! 9-4pm.It's a good time, friends. Love to see you there. Backyard Garlic will have a tent on Congress Street near the Gas Light Co.
A Road Race starts the morning, there are multiple stages with music and performance, lots of good food and cooling beverages. And the intangibles too - community, conversation, exploring, and discovering even more ways to love the sweet town of Portsmouth, NH.

The sun is back in sight, sky clear of clouds, and winds are nothing but whisps today. Hooray!
The garlic likes consistent watering and has had its fill of wet weather of late. With good drainage the plants do fine. But the stretch of dry hotter days ahead is welcome, indeed.

Backyard Garlic's paper mâchè bulb has a new display frame. Made by friends of friends years and years ago and gifted to founder Margaret the bulb now hangs beside our cotton t-shirts at vending events. A couple times every year someone approaches the vending table to share stories about how the big bulb made an appearance at school parties and garlic harvesting gatherings in and around the NH seacoast. Happy Margaret let me keep it when she retired.

Happy Earth Day! This photo of zinnia and hydrangea lit by a Maine-pink sunset was taken on a good day on this good earth last year. It popped into my mind when I thought about all the seeds about to sprout in bursts of color.
A quote from Rachel Carson's book, Silent Spring. "Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts."
There has been a lot to endure this past year. And much to draw strength from too.
