"The roundups were described as urgent due to overpopulation and thinning resources on ranges. “Today, more than 85,000 wild horses and burros live on public lands in the West, even though the landscape can sustainably support only about 25,500,” according to a BLM news release".

Seven wild horse roundups are planned in Nevada beginning in October and ending in mid-2027 due to overpopulation and thinning resources on ranges.

Cattle grazing plays an important role in reducing fine fuels on grazed rangelands in Nevada. Without grazing we would have hundreds to thousands of additional pounds/acre of fine fuels on the landscape, potentially leading to larger and more severe fires. Letting land sit unmanaged and untouched is a recipe for disaster. Temperatures rise and vegetation turns to brown brush. The dry tinder coupled with high winds turn beautiful landscapes into flammable, even deadly, terrain. Livestock grazing can be used as a tool to lower wildfire risk, as well as reduce the ultimate impact of the fire, by slowing down how fast the flames spread and how hot the fire burns. They do this by grazing down the annual and perennial grasses, promoting new growth and leaving far less dead underbrush that acts as kindling to a fire.

Peak fire activity is underway, and many communities are feeling the heat! As you explore our beautiful public lands, let’s work together to minimize the risk of human-caused wildfires. With numerous lightning-caused fires already keeping wildland firefighters busy, we can all do our part to prevent additional wildfires. Here’s how you can help:

🌲 Check for fire restrictions before heading out.
🔥 Use campfires only in designated areas and ensure they’re completely extinguished.
🚗 Keep vehicles on designated roads and avoid parking on dry grass.
🚬 Dispose of smoking materials responsibly.
🗑️ Pack out your trash and leave our public lands even better than you found them!

Remember, one spark can change everything. Together, we can protect our public lands, wildlife, and the communities that cherish these spaces. Let’s make this season safe and enjoyable for everyone! 💚

Succession planning is one of the most critical yet difficult conversations for farming and ranching families. To help producers navigate this process, the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) has launched a new online learning resource designed to secure the future of American agricultural operations.

New online learning resources and workbooks from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association help cattle producers navigate transition planning and secure the future of their family operations.
