Everything changed when we bought a whole melon on vacation. 🍈

Questionable tools. Tiny hotel kitchenette. There was only one person for the job.

I AM NOT TOPH. I AM MELON LORD. MWAHAHAHA!

Turns out Melon Lord is surprisingly resourceful. 😂

I saw the most ridiculously beautiful bright-pink blackberry sourdough from Jesha Ann Stevens and immediately had questions. 💗

Was all that color really from blackberries? Beet powder? Food coloring? And what were the ratios?!

There wasn’t a recipe to follow, so I did what any reasonable person with a backyard producing more blackberries than we can reasonably eat would do: messed with my usual sourdough recipe and hoped for the best. 😅

Mine definitely did not turn out hot pink… but I’ll happily take purple. 💜 The blackberry flavor was surprisingly mild, which actually makes this bread pretty versatile.

And I already know what needs to happen next.

Grilled cheese. Obviously.

MISSION: COMPLETE. 🫡

After a week of calling McDonald’s, comparing notes with neighbors and coworkers, avoiding duplicates, and acquiring what I can only describe as local Happy Meal intelligence… we did it. 🤣

Today I learned from a former McDonald’s employee that the toys actually arrive mixed together. So I went back to the same location as yesterday and VERY politely asked if they might be willing to look for the ones we were missing.

I was sweating like I was asking them to commit a crime. 😅

And then the nicest employees came through. ALL 8.

Some for us, some for my neighbor, some for my coworker… and somehow this has now evolved into plans for a toy trading/crafting party because apparently this is who we are now.

Meanwhile, Norrin remained committed to the only mission that mattered to him: the fries. 🍟

Was it my careful explanation? Having an actual child with me? The neighborhood children I said were counting on me?

Personally, I’m giving the credit to the lucky corn earrings. 🌽🤣

I haven’t eaten at McDonald’s in probably 20 years.

Apparently all it took to bring me back was Hello Kitty dressed as Godzilla. 😂

Ever since I heard this Happy Meal was coming, my neighbor, my colleague and I have been on a MISSION.

We’ve visited different McDonald’s. Compared toy numbers. Acquired duplicates. My colleague currently has approximately 10 million King Ghidorahs. 🤣

My neighbor even went to TWO locations and left my first toys on my doorstep for me. At this point, we’re joking about having a trading/crafting party so the duplicates can become keychains and holiday ornaments.

Today the staff told me they only had toy 7.

Perfect. I didn’t have toy 7.

So naturally I got a Happy Meal… and bought an extra toy on the side.

Got home.

Opened the boxes.

TOY 3 AND TOY 7. 🎉🙌

I now have 1, 2, 3 & 7.

Yes, I’m a child.
Yes, I’m delighted.
No, I will not be taking questions. 😂

Meanwhile, the actual child was briefly impressed by Mothra and then discovered the fries. 🍟

For context: I am NOT fancy about coffee. ☕️

Instant is my daily go-to. I can handle a regular pod machine, and when I make drip coffee, apparently I make it strong enough to “put hair on your chest,” according to my stepdad. 😂

So when the hotel presented me with this fancy machine and its mysterious little pods, I was already out of my realm.

There were instructions. They did not help.

Attempt 1 produced vaguely coffee-colored water, a mangled pod and a brief moment when I genuinely thought I had broken the machine.

Round 2, fight…oh. Decaf. 😑

ROUND 2, FIGHT. Again.

Eventually: actual coffee. 🙌

And a completely disproportionate sense of accomplishment.

MAMA MIA, IT’S A NESPRESSO! ☕️😂

The blackberries have officially reached the point where I can’t keep up. 🫐😂

There are SO many ready to pick… conveniently located behind the ever-expanding pumpkin jungle and across a yard currently being patrolled by yellow jackets.

So blackberry picking has become a matter of timing.

Wait for an opening.
Get in.
Pick fast.
Get out. 🫡

At least today’s mission was successful.

And apparently every successful blackberry harvest needs a celebratory pinwheel. ❤️🤍💙

Today’s hotel cooking demonstration comes to you live from the bathroom sink. 🥗😂

It was the only available place to wash our produce, and vacation vegetables do not care about ambience.

We’d picked up all this beautiful produce from a little farm stand on our drive down the California coast, and after several days of restaurant food and leftovers, I was VERY ready for something fresh.

Was making a salad in the hotel bathroom elegant? No.

Did we still end up with a fresh salad? Absolutely.

And despite the questionable venue… no salads caused diarrhea today. 😂
