Carla Rosa, Eva, Chieftain and Kennebec, if you know those names then you know they are potatoes.

And yes we finally got potatoes planted for the year. All 200 pounds of seed potatoes which comes down to 1,500 feet of potatoes.

With all of May being too wet to plant, we are slowly catching up. More good things on the way!

Make sure you head over to the Celina Farmers Market today! There are lots of wonderful vendors this week!

Yesterday was finally dry enough, so we started prepping the pepper field! First step, till in the 3 foot tall hairy vetch and rye cover crop that was planted last fall.

We plant cover crops for a variety of reasons, prevent erosion, suppress weeds, help feed beneficial soil organisms, hold on to excess nutrients and add nutrients to the soil.

How do they add nutrients? By working together with soil bacteria, hairy vetch, a legume, will form tiny nodules on their roots. These nodules will be a home for bacteria, that pull nitrogen, from the air. That's right. As the soil breathes, bacteria are able to grab nitrogen from the air. How cool is that! And it's no small amount either. Hairy vetch can fix on average 50-150 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Cover crops are definitely worth checking out!
