Small Farm Alert- Please call or write the Governor and let her know you support this bill. If you trust me, believe that passing this law will not affect food safety, but it will open commerce to the 85%!!!! of small farmers in NH!
There ARE SAFEGUARDS IN PLACE in this Bill 396. It allows:
“V. No more than the following number of animals shall be processed per month under this paragraph:
(a) Three cattle.
(b) Five swine.
(c) Ten sheep or goats, or a combination thereof.”
And there is a registration process with the NH Dept of Food and Agriculture.
Consider that the slaughter houses can do a usda slaughter and the small farmers could cut up parts and sell them to you instead of a half cow. Consider you can look your farmer in the eye and know that is where your food comes from or that they have a personal business relationship with the LOCAL butcher that humanely slaughters your food. Consider the farmer doesn’t have to travel a long distance, stress out their animal and pay more only to pass those costs on to retail. Just consider and send a quick message to the Gov. We would be first in the nation on this. The feds are actually starting to embrace the Prime Act! Let’s do this!!!
I’d love to sell a little lamb this fall Salem, NH Farmers Market!
The bill seeks to create a framework in state law for farmers to process meat at their farms or other facilities beside those approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
