A crisis for our pollinators: US beekeepers have just faced their worst year on record, losing more than half of their bee colonies due to a destructive mix of varroa mites, viruses, and pesticides.

Compounding the crisis, the planned closure of the historic USDA Beltsville bee lab leaves apiarists without vital research and diagnostic support just when they need it most.

In a lot behind a disused West Virginia gas station at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains, Roy Funkhouser is surrounded by about a dozen beekeepers and countless buzzing bees.

FUN FACT FRIDAY: From Local Roots to State Honors!

Did you know the honey bee didn't just stumble into its title as the official NC State Insect? It took a lot of passionate grassroots advocacy to make it happen!
In the early 1970s, local beekeeping clubs and the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association (NCSBA) launched a massive campaign to highlight just how vital these pollinators are to our state's agriculture. Thanks to their hard work, the General Assembly officially adopted the honey bee on June 5, 1973 (N.C. G.S. § 145-8).

Next time you see a bee buzzing through the yard, you're looking at a sweet piece of NC history!
