Corn? Maíz? Elote? Mazorca? 🌽
Call it what you will, but it’s getting close to picking time!

We will give away sweet corn starting on Saturday, September 5th, with your purchase of our extraordinary live tilapia, catfish, or sea bass(lubina).

I’m already dreaming of fresh sea bass Zarandeado with picked-that-morning sweet corn. Or maybe a la talla? Al horno? Or is it time for caldo already?

What do you think? Let us know! Post a picture! We love to see how you enjoy our fish.

Oh, and please share this post with your friends. We've got LOTS of corn this year: let’s make sure it doesn’t go to waste!

What is Barramundi like? 🤔🌊 Imagine a giant ocean sea bass or red snapper, but raised right here in clean spring water. Its meat is white, thick, juicy, and has a very clean, mild flavor.

Being a large fish of 4 to 6 pounds, it's not meant to be fried whole like tilapia. Its meat is perfect for cutting into thick steaks for a great soup, or for butterflying it open to show off on the grill.

Come see what all the fuss is about! We're open Saturday 9am-4pm!

Growing corn has to be one of the most gratifying things we do. This time of year, with the heat, the water, and the fish p**p, you can hear it grow.

Don’t believe me? Scientists put microphones in a cornfield, and when the plants recover from the day’s heat and fill back up with water, they crackle. A corn plant grows mostly at night, and up to two inches per day.

The plants are tasseling this week, so 21 days until the first corn will be ready.

As always, free with your fish purchase. It’s how we get to say “thank you” to all our friends and neighbors. See you in three weeks. 🌽

Shout out to The Daily Sprout for helping us understand the fascinating phenomenon of "hearing the corn grow".

It’s been a while but it is almost time! The new crop of catfish will go on sale on Saturday, August 19!

Catfish has been farmed in this country since the ‘60’s. You’d think that like just about any other fish, we’d have eggs or fingerlings available when we need them….. but we don’t. Trout, tilapia, barramundi, even bass the last few years are available year round.

But Catfish? Nope. They just spawn in July, when the water gets into the high seventies. If you miss it, you get to wait until next year.

So we do our best to stretch that one spawn out as long as we can, but Mother Nature always wins. By the time Christmas rolls around, they’ll probably be 4 lbs, and not too many people are looking for a 4 lb catfish for Sunday soup. Even in December, lol.

So, enjoy them while they last. Next year’s crop just hatched, it’ll be a while!

Sometimes I forget. I’m sure we all do. There’s lots to do, things to check, fish to feed, fish to move, fish to grade, equipment to maintain. And I miss it.

The good stuff, I mean. We need to remember the reasons why we love being farmers.

Like the Minor Ground Mantid. Just hanging out by a pond. This Mantid is perfectly camouflaged for success in our High Desert.

Unlike the more familiar ( and invasive) Praying Mantid, our native Minor Ground Mantid doesn’t wait for prey to come by, it actively runs, jumps and catches a variety of insects. Including flies, which makes it popular on our farm!

Not much more than an inch, but mighty. And worth stopping and watching for a minute, even on a busy morning.

How dry is it this year? Dry enough for safflower.

We’re been growing fish at our farm in Grace since 2000, and it’s never been close to this dry. Our spring flow is dropping, and barring something approaching Noah’s flood, by the time next season’s snow starts recharging the aquifer in the Spring, our flow will be close to record lows.

We’re still fortunate that there will be enough water for the fish, if we are careful and wise. We are very much blessed by the consistency of our spring, even in dry seasons.

For our neighbor’s, choices are more difficult. There’s not enough water for the crops in our valley. Irrigation allotments have been cut way, way back.

One of the choices has been to plant safflower. It’s an oil seed crop that tolerates little to no water while still producing a crop. It doesn’t produce tonnage like wheat or potatoes, but it does produce with little or no irrigation.

So if you come see us this Saturday, and you see the safflower fields blooming, you know how dry it is this year. Dry enough for safflower.

One of our customers builds custom fish frying pans. He brought them to the farm last weekend and sold two! He's got two more available and doesn't know when he can make more as the discs are hard to find. These would be perfect for frying fish over the 4th of July weekend!

If you're interested, call Marco at 208-380-1139.

If you have anything similarly "fishy" that you make & sell that might be of interest to our customers, please let us know. We'd be happy to help promote it on the farm and here on Facebook!
