Ever noticed those huge, winding veins running along the belly of a dairy cow? 🐄🥛

Those are called milk veins, and they’re one of the most incredible examples of nature’s engineering.

To produce milk, a dairy cow needs an enormous blood supply flowing through her udder. In fact, it takes roughly 400-500 pounds of blood circulation to produce just one pound of milk!

The larger and more developed the milk veins, the more blood can return from the udder, helping support milk production. While they aren’t the only indicator of a good dairy cow, those prominent veins are often a sign of a hardworking milk maker.

Every gallon of milk starts long before it reaches the bucket—it begins with healthy cows, good nutrition, proper care, and an amazing circulatory system working around the clock.

Nature never ceases to amaze me. ❤️🐄

June is National Dairy Month!!

I am absolutely late to post….. I took a vacation to visit family for a week and my husband manned the farm with our boys.

Anyways! Let’s celebrate the amazing benefits of milk and the labor of love behind such a beneficial product!!

From large farms to small ones like us, it takes so much work from cow to bottle.

How we are different- we have 4 milk ladies. We take individual time with each one daily to ensure her nutritional needs are met and they are cared for. Each cow is health tested annually and at any point in time we have to treat them, such as an injury like Leila had last year, their milk is pulled from rotation. Their components are monitored closely. Thankfully mastitis is rarely an issue, we don’t have that problem here. We pride ourselves in low bacteria counts across the board. We do not calf share ever. The bacteria load calves can carry and transfer to their moms is not worth the risk for us! Our cows are machine milked and immediately chilled to 36 degrees in under an hour. It never touches human hands. All of our equipment is meticulously cleaned and maintained before and after every milking. Bottles are thoroughly washed and sanitized prior to bottling.
Our girls are fed high quality grain only at milking, provided minerals, graze unsprayed pastures, and hay.
We milk twice a day, every day, regardless of anything.

We pour our hearts into our girls and into every bottle of milk we produce. It’s truly a labor of love we put so much pride into!

It’s been a little over a week so I thought I’d share a quick little update on the free range momma duck and her posse of babies! She unfortunately lost one at some point but the fact that she still has 9 of them is amazing. They are so much fun to watch roam around the farm!
