For those of you still wondering about Patcharee's kitchen when the health food store closes, we're staying put. Same location. Same staff, same hours. And most importantly, same delicious food!

There will be a short one week closing for the final touches of the slow but steady renovation, 1 - 8 June.

Lots of friends and customers are asking about Patcharee's kitchen future when Gunnison vitamin shutters the doors in a month. Patcharee's has signed a three year lease for our little sliver of the meadows mall.

A wall goes up at the end of May separating us from the vitamin shop space. In the meantime, Patcharees will attemp to upgrade our digs to something slightly above the cafeteria ambiance we have maintained since our opening. The potwasher is not much of a formal dining guy, so don't expect a lot. However, it will look more like a Thai eatery than a cafeteria.

We hope to have the place spruced up by mid June - a slow do it yourself project because the potwasher is a cheapskate, as well. You're always welcome to stop by and check the progress - and critique the potwasher's lacking interior design skills.

The original Patcharee's Kitchen menu! How things have changed.

Patcharee's Kitchen began in a small kitchen in a house on West Tomichi. The potwasher would text orders to Patcharee from work. She used sticky notes to write the orders out and tack them to a Kitchen cabinet. Customers would show up at the house and pick up their orders at the designated time.

Eventually the health department caught on and a modern Patcharee's kitchen emerged!

Still doing lots of takeout, ordered by phone and text, with a growing eat in crowd

And some things haven't changed that much.

Patcharee and her sidekick (former potwasher) have been hanging out together for a few years. They bought and owned a beachside restaurant on the island of PhaNgan for 10 years before coming to Gunnison. The restaurant served both Thai and western food. Patcharee's food was famous on the island. He and Patcharee created a restaurant that was multi-cultural. In other words, the sidekick knows food.

So what has the sidekick learned from Patcharee about food? Three things:
1) Don't be afraid of sugar. It adds an element to food that cannot be replicated by any other spice or ingredient.
2) Western food demands cremation of the ingredients. Don't do it! Cook your meals so the vegetables still retain a bit of structure - and worthwhile nutrients. In other words, you don't need to satuee the veggies beforehand. Just throw them into the mix or sauce.
3) Heat (chilies), even a pinch, adds a level of taste or element that transcends all other spice. A simle tingle on the tongue makes a good dish into a fabulous meal.
