Happy 4th of July!

May at Lava Lake Ranch is hard to beat!

The season is in full swing and boy is it going to be a busy one! We will spend the month of June welcoming an all-female group to come shed hunting at the ranch and then kick off the 12th year of our injured veterans equine program. And don’t forget to look for us at our Farmer’s Market booth with all of your summer grilling product! While all of that is going on, our herder Hector will be traveling into the mountains with the sheep, and cattle will graze happily at the main ranch.

Thank you to everyone who helps make this happen

Springtime livestock and wildlife at the ranch!

This is a special time of year. The world is waking up- new lambs are exploring outside of their winter barn, pronghorn roam the hillsides, shoots of spring grass pop up, and each day the sun lasts a bit longer.

We’re looking forward to our 26th year at Lava Lake! What are you most excited for this season?

Happy International Women’s Day! Over the last 25 years at Lava Lake Ranch, we have been blessed to work with countless impressive women from biologists to horsewomen, interns to veterans, and so many more. Being a woman in the ranching industry takes grit, it takes grace, and it takes unyielding commitment to continue to live on this beautiful Idaho earth. Today, we’d like to say a special thank you to:

Kathleen Bean, co-owner of Lava Lake Ranch

Fiona Bean, co-manager of Lava Lake Ranch

And Phoebe and Caroline Bean, who are pursuing PhDs on the East Coast but who continue to head up our research and conservation non-profit and will be returning home to the ranch soon!

‼️Statement about recent federal firings:

Ranching depends on strong relationships. For the past 26 years, Lava Lake has been privileged to build those relationships with individuals and organizations across the public and private sectors. Dozens of federal employees from the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Natural Resources Conservation Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, Veterans Affairs, U.S. Department of Agriculture, and Environmental Protection Agency have lent their expertise and knowledge to help us advance our ranching and conservation mission in southern Idaho.

Some of our partners have lost their jobs in the past weeks with no consideration or acknowledgment of their value to our community. Our public lands and the wildlife that depend on them are key to our way of life here in Idaho and drive our economy. Even more importantly, our wildlife and wild places nurture our souls. To depopulate these agencies of accomplished and dedicated civil servants is shortsighted, destructive, and will have far-reaching consequences.

To our friends who have lost jobs or valued employees, we are with you.

For those who are not immediately impacted, please join us in calling 202-224-3121 to reach the Congressional switchboard and tell your representative that you value the contributions of these agencies and their staff. Make it personal! Share a story that shows why you care about this issue.

We love the vantage point from our Cottonwood property because you begin by looking at Blizzard Mountain at the tail end of the Pioneers, and then if you turn around you get to look down into Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Fall harvest 🍂

We feel so blessed to live on this land and to be able to enjoy what it offers. If you take care of the land, it will take care of you!

We hiked up a remote part of the ranch this week and were lucky enough to harvest a bounty of elderberries that we just turned into elderberry syrup to boost our immune systems through the long winter months to come.

We’ve also been getting tons of blackberries from our bushes on the main ranch, so a couple of batches of blackberry jam was a must!

Last but not least, we processed the cottonwood bud oil that’s been soaking since our spring harvest. This will turn into a salve that works wonders on sore muscles and bruises.

The Trailing of the Sheep Festival is right around the corner! We are so excited and honored to be involved in yet another . We said goodbye to Mari (AKA Chewy) yesterday. At 15 years old it was her time to go, but that doesn’t make it any easier to say goodbye to such a loyal companion. She spent her first 10 years with us out on the range with the sheep. In her final 5 years of retirement she got to relax at the main ranch with her half-sister Lucy.

My favorite thing about Mari was that, even in retirement, she was still on the job. She would go out chasing coyotes at night, and although sometimes she came back with a few scratches, you could tell she had had the best time. She was a ranch dog through and through, the perfect mixture of grit and sweetness. She always greeted us with a smile and a full-body tail wag. She will be dearly missed. Rest in Peace.

It’s time to reimagine how you cook with lamb!

We’ve never tried our ground lamb on pizza before, but Ben, a loyal customer at the , gave us his Lava Lake Lamb Ground Lamb Pizza recipe and we are loving it! Simple, quick and delicious.

•Make your pizza dough or pick some up at the store (if you’re in a rush we recommend buying premade pizza crust)

•Thaw your lamb and mix in 1 teaspoon of paprika, 1 teaspoon of cumin, and a pinch of Himalayan salt & cracked pepper, then roll into small meatballs

•Spread tomato sauce over your pizza dough

•Add shredded mozzarella and a smidge of fontina

•Add 1 bell pepper (chopped)

•Finish it off with your (raw) lamb meatballs

•Bake in the oven at 500° for 7-10 minutes. Broil for the last 2 minutes.

•Enjoy!!
