I would like to introduce our new 2nd in command Olive Egger rooster Tobias! He is still young ( 7 months) but is becoming a good protector under our big boy Willow (Buff Orpington) who is 5 years old now.

Not sure if I should intervene- the first momma has 2 chicks that are about a 1 1/2 weeks old. This has been her nest the WHOLE time. The Momma in the back has 1 chick that is 3 days old. New momma brought baby out of the nest to the little run area today- around dusk I picked them both up & put them by the nesting boxes & she went into this nest instead of one next to it. I got to secure them for the night & this is what I find!! 🤣😂🤣😂

The broody hen coop is doing its job!! Opened things up this morning & look what we found 😍 We have another momma with almost 2 week olds. It’s so amazing how calm they are. This was definitely the right move, momma’s are not stressed, babies are safe from being trampled & it gives me the ability to get close to the babies❤️❤️

Last night was a very traumatic night. Before we went out & locked the coop up for the night a neighbor’s dog came from 2 streets over & went into the coop. He managed to kill 3 of our younger hens. The owner was very sorry & plans on making everything right, which we greatly appreciate, but it doesn’t take away the trauma the flock experienced or the trauma of me watching him crunch one of our baby’s just to drop her & take off for another one. We do not fault the dog, he was just being a dog. We are very concerned that if he gets out again he will come straight back due to the “fun” he had. 😞 Our head rooster Willow did everything in his power to protect the flock. After getting as many as possible out the coop he came right back viciously attacking our unwanted visitor. Willow did an amazing job & was not injured last night ❤️ The flock is still very stressed with lots of hiding & huddling going on💔 We have given them some Kickin Chicken with extra treats to help with the stress.

We have been keeping my eye on a hen who seemed to start isolating herself. At first we thought she was just hiding from the new young rooster, we have another hen that is doing that. This evening she didn’t come out for evening snacks. I found her laying in the corner under the nesting boxes. So we brought her in & gave her an epson salt soak & started blow drying her to find that she is molting! She has TONS of pin feathers under her top feathers 😁 I’m so glad she’s not ill , we continued her spa therapy. She was given a scrabble egg with the shell, some canned cat food , a splash of Kickin Chicken & placed in the bathroom for a quiet night. ❤️❤️❤️

The Broody Hen/ Isolation Coop is FINISHED!!! We have 2 want to be momma that we will move in tonight❤️❤️
The nesting area is  predator proof once locked up, with plenty of ventilation!
I can’t wait until tomorrow morning to see how they like it!

On these extremely hot days we will wet down 3-4 shaded areas for the flock to cool down. Throwing some treats in there ...
