Just a robin’s nest. But they are so meticulous in the creation of that twig, grass, smooth mud lined perfect circle. She took that lovely protected shelf, out of the wind and facing east, and is steadfastly incubating. So many different birds make their homes on the ranch, and it is the plenitude of insect life that supports them, and the rich soils. Agricultural poisons destroy that web of life. Rich perennial pastures and wild and domestic livestock maintain them.

Baby American Milking Devon heifer MOXIE’S PENNY found a nice spot to spend the 35F night. We wish the rain and warmth would come soon. But not too warm! That mountain snow, scarce though it is, is all our irrigation water for this summer’s hay crop.

Working ranches are deep sanctuaries for wildlife. This Wilson’s Snipe (Gallinego delicata) is taking advantage of moist ground in the borrow pits along the road for its earthworm excavations. As I take this photo, the Sandhill cranes are calling, the Bald Eagle’s chick is approaching adult size, and the Northern House Wren (Troglodytes aedon) has just set up melodious shop beside the house. The ranch, with its perennial pastures and lack of poisons(herbicides, etc) is bursting with life at this time of year. I am so lucky to be here!

Just ask my kids! My son Riley Sabo and I were out working cattle, cleaning house, tidying the greenhouse, pounding posts, repairing gates, andd irrigating. Hmmmmm

Starting the transition towards green grass. NoFence collars. Last year I was the only one in the neighborhood. This year, there are virtual@collars all over the county!
