The most fun part of soap day is playing with color. Mixing, blending, layering, and hoping the swirls behave. Sometimes there are surprises (this blue batter turned green... but has since turned back to blue. Whew!)

We have been working on some small-batch special edition goat milk soaps and can't wait until their time on the drying rack is finished! Want to know when they're ready? Subscribe to our newsletter - that's where you'll get first dibs on all of our product drops.

Ever open a new jar of local honey and wonder why the color or flavor doesn't match the last one?

It's floral constancy - a foraging bee's tendency to stick with one flower species per foraging trip. When a specific bloom takes over the landscape, the whole hive locks in. That's why a jar of kiawe varietal honey is pale and creamy, while wildflower honey shifts color and flavor every time we harvest. Honey is a snapshot of what's blooming in this specific moment, in this specific place.

This year, I've been sending honey samples for DNA testing so I can learn more about the nectar sources in my area. As an added bonus, the data comes back with info not only about the nectar, but basically any organisms my bees come into contact with. I'm learning so much! More on that soon... :)

Anyone else feel like this bee lately? 😍🐝 Stretched to the max, hanging on but not really sure where this all going?

Maybe I'm reading too much into this little gal's emotional state... 😆 Whatever your coming week holds, keep hanging in there!

My bare hands aren't about bravery - they're about working slowly and carefully.

When I started out, thick leather gloves were always part of my uniform in the apiary. They helped me feel safe, which helped me stay calm. But as I got more comfortable with the bees in general, I noticed that the gloves made me clumsy and imprecise, so I started working the hives without them.

Working with bare hands means I can actually feel what’s happening in the hive. It forces me to move smoothly and with intention, paying attention to every motion. And I’m very motivated to not squish any bees under my unprotected fingertips.

Yes, I still get stung. It’s rare and almost always the result of grabbing a frame without checking to see if anyone is on the underside. Fortunately, my body has adapted over the years - it hurts in the moment, but the pain fades fast with almost no swelling or itching. And, if the bees are having a feisty day, or my work in the hive is more disruptive than usual, I will definitely bust out the gloves.
