This time of year Cyclospora is a popular topic in the fresh produce industry. It is a microscopic parasite that can cause an intestinal infection known as cyclosporiasis. The infection is typically contracted through ingesting food or water contaminated with the parasite, often in tropical or subtropical regions. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite, weight loss, bloating, increased gas, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, muscle aches, low-grade fever, and fatigue.

Prevention of cyclosporiasis involves several measures primarily focused on food and water safety:

Safe Food Practices: Always wash hands before handling food. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating, cutting, or cooking, even if they are labeled "prewashed". Peeling fruits and vegetables can also help reduce risk.

Avoid Contaminated Water: Be cautious of potentially contaminated water sources. This is especially important while traveling in regions where cyclospora is common.

Travel Awareness: When traveling, be aware of the local risks for cyclospora and other foodborne illnesses. In some countries, it might be safer to drink bottled or boiled water and eat cooked foods.

Proper Hygiene: Regular handwashing with soap and warm water is critical, especially before preparing or consuming food.

The best way to prevent infection is by practicing good hygiene and being cautious about what you eat and drink.

June 21st is celebrated as the National Dachshund Day because it's the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. Since Dachshunds are the longest dog breed proportional to its size, it stands to reason that we'd celebrate these dogs on June 21st.
