In the past the farm has focused on mule and donkey production, recently we have cut back on our mare herd and increased our jennet pool by number and quality. Showing and breaking donkeys to ride and drive, selling quality show donkeys and promoting them on the trail and across the country is what Kat and I do. Genesis Sateen had a great first drive off of the farm this weekend at the Morris Farm in Liberty Kentucky.
We had just gotten some rain in the morning so it made the going a little deep, man she is so powerful and worked so well in spite of it.

I am thrilled to welcome Angie Wyly-Boitnott and her family to the Genesis Farms family with her purchase of Metal Dancer.

This beauty was born 4/25/26, her sire is Desert Full Metal Jacket, her dam is Eternally Clyde.

Angie has waited a whole year to shop at the “boutique”, and I’m so happy to put this full sister to Maximum Metal in her shopping cart.

Dancer will be heading to Prescott Arizona in the fall to live at the Buckin B***o Ranch where all good things will happen for her. 🫏🥰🫏😻

I’ve had this little video now for 3 or 4 years just tucked away on my phone. I think it’s likely one of the best visuals I’ve seen on how and how not to trot with a donkey in hand.

Both of these jennets were born on my farm in the same year and I trained both of them to lead correctly including trotting in hand before they went off to their new owners.

The donkeys themselves were equal in their ages and experiences. It’s the handlers that provide the education. Our first handler (no names provided) had very little experience in showing a donkey in hand, she did have some direction provided prior to class but as you can see it went right out the window when she got into the ring. Been there myself a few times, the nerves can make you forget your own name. The second handler very steady and kept to her process.

But just look at the reaction that happens when handler one can’t stop looking at her donkey, attempts to pull her along and then gets out ahead of her. Classic donkey shut down.

Donkeys take eye contact very seriously.
Donkeys don’t like to trot up if you’re ahead of their shoulder.
Donkeys don’t like to trot while being pulled.

Handler number two had a cue for her donkey, and she waited for her donkey to get into the trot before she moved ahead. They worked as a unit. At no time did handler two loose faith in her donkey and confront her donkey by swinging her head around to look at her.

I know I’ve yodeled at a few people over the years for just this issue, but here it is in the best visual representation I can provide.

A Donkey Service Announcement brought to you by Genesis Farms

A fellow breeder friend of mine and I were recently discussing some practical attributes of forward saddle donkeys and I mentioned nostril size.

I was telling her that over the years I’ve had a few donkeys come across my desk that had restricted nostril openings and one Mammoth bred jennet that had a collapsing nostril. Even when standing quietly her airway would almost completely close with each breath.
I was saying that I really felt like it was something that had to be considered when breeding for donkeys with big motors as they needed all that oxygen for doing the high end gaits for any sustained period of time.

Simply put, muscles need oxygen and nostrils are the gateway to getting it.

So the next time you’re out shopping for a hard working saddle donkey and you have an expectation that it be able to trot or lope for an extended period of time, don’t forget to look at those nostrils, they can be as important as any other favorable characteristic.
