What you see here is the quiet connection that comes from years spent working hard together, weathering storms, and building things. In the left, Neptaly Santos and on the right, Angel Noriega. They (with their remarkable wives Lily and Cati, who took the photo) have been our partners high in the collared mountain region of El Corazon (how fitting, the heart) in Chirinos, for years. They created the cooperative and, with us as their exclusive international partners, have slowly added a cupping lab, more partners, deeper practices.

As we celebrate Swift’s 1-year anniversary this weekend, we process what a remarkable time we had in San Diego at WOC with our friends, customers, suppliers, team. It was a shocking explosion of joy, purpose, reward for all these years of investment into an industry that still has so much to teach us.

Here’s the hilarious thing about Swift’s brand new commercial lab/office in Kansas City: Michael and I have rented it before.

That’s a whole story for another day. For now, I’ll say that although it’s more space than we currently need, it’s perfect for our needs. Sample roasters plug in later this week. Sample packaging (which we have been doing in our home and about which I’ll be writing a Friday Unfiltered soon) will be done here. Cupping will be done here, just in time for several containers to land.

We’ve got some heavy lifting ahead of us, but the puzzle pieces are slotting into place!

This moment captures the essence of Swift’s first coffee buying trip. So many importers throw lavish trips for buyers. This isn’t that.

What you’re seeing (l-r) is , la mamá de Dionisio, and connecting in the dirt floor kitchen where this beautiful 86-yo woman lives at Finca la Encañada.

When I jumped out of the bed of Dionisio’s mud-encrusted pickup truck I fell into her arms. She’s so strong she still grinds the corn for the ducks (20 babies and one mama in the coop right now) but she feels more fragile than last time I visited. She murmured into my shoulder and asked when my parents will come back and said they’d better hurry so she sees them again before she changes worlds.

This sourcing trip was many things. Grimy, intense, hilarious, professional, joyous, connected.

The work we do goes deeper than moving containers of green around. It supports livelihoods of people who deserve good things and it shifts entire valley cultures.

For me, this is just the beginning of countless more moments this raw and meaningful.

Listening. We coffee people from consuming countries sure like to talk. Every time we do something it’s like we are the first. Origin work—glamorous, sure, but also intensely difficult and demanding and risky—requires setting aside our own perspectives to grasp what’s going on in this other world.

My Spanish comprehension is increasing a lot and, while far from perfect, I’m beginning to grasp more history and subtext. Last night, overlooking the majesty of , Angel and I talked about his years leading the Latin American sourcing and sales program for Sustainable Harvest, how he got the idea for his famed fruit cupping wandering the markets in Mexico for the first Let’s Talk Coffee event, and how he set the parameters for the Tastify app.

I’ve known him for ten years, and knew some of this, but the privilege to hear it (especially in this setting) reminds me: let me close my mouth unless I need to talk.

Life’s more interesting that way.
